Tennis best bets and predictions for ATP Toronto and WTA Montreal – Wednesday, August 9th

The US Open is just about a month away, which means tennis season is really heating up. There will be a lot of big tournaments over the next couple of weeks, so VSiN is here to provide you with tennis best bets as often as possible. With that in mind, keep reading to get my picks for Tuesday, August 8th. This week, the focus is on the National Bank Open in Toronto and Omnium National Bank in Montreal — two 1000-level events. I’ll look to make picks on both the men and the women, and I’ll probably be adding more to these columns each day. So, make sure you refresh for more picks — or click the link below for the Pro Picks page.

Matteo Berrettini vs. Jannik Sinner

Sinner hasn’t played since his lackluster performance against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, and he won’t exactly ease into things in Toronto. Sinner will have to face Berrettini in his first match, and the big server is in good form right now. Berrettini put up a fight against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, where he also beat Lorenzo Sonego, Alex De MInaur and Alexander Zverev. Berrettini also got his feet wet in Canada already, having defeated Gregoire Barrere 6-4, 6-3 in his opening match. Overall, the Italian is healthy and his forehand looks excellent.

This will be the first meeting between these fellow countrymen. So, we don’t have any history to draw on here. But I have a hard time believing that Sinner will find a way to get through this one in straight sets. Sure, Sinner is a very good returner, but Berrettini can hit his spots with the best of them. And when Sinner does find a way to block the serve back in play, Berrettini should be able to calmly hit winners from the forehand side. He’s one of the bests in the business when it comes to the serve plus one.

This just feels like a match that is destined to have some long, competitive sets. And if that’s the case, I trust Berrettini to come away with at least one of them.

Bet: Berrettini +1.5 Sets (-160 – 2 units)

Katie Boulter vs. Coco Gauff

This price feels like a bit of an overreaction to what we saw from Gauff last week. The American won the Citi Open without dropping a single set, earning notable wins over players like Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari along the way. And Gauff’s faulty forehand looked much better, which says a lot about her new partnership with coach Brad Gilbert. But I’m not ready to consider that a shot that’s completely fixed. It was so flawed before this that it’s hard to believe a few weeks changed everything.

Boulter also happens to be playing very well coming into this match. She went through qualifying without losing a set and then earned a straight-set win over Canadian Rebecca Marino. Boulter is now 6-2 in her last eight matches and she’s looking rock-solid on the court. On top of that, Boulter won 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in her only previous encounter with Gauff, so she does have the luxury of knowing she can beat the player on the other side of the net.

Ultimately, Gauff does have the weapons required to beat Boulter in straight sets. But at this outrageous price, I’m taking the Brit and hoping she can keep things competitive. Gauff also must find a way to get up for this match after having won the biggest title of her career. A let down could be imminent.

Bet: Boulter +1.5 Sets (+195)

Francisco Cerundolo vs. Tommy Paul

Cerundolo hasn’t been playing his best tennis lately. The Argentinean needed three ugly sets to beat Alexis Galarneau in the first round of this tournament, and that came after essentially losing back-to-back matches on clay. Cerundolo now has to face a player that is in a nice groove right now, as Paul has won two of his last three matches. And his one loss was a very competitive match against Alex De Minaur, where the conditions seemingly got to the American.

I just like Paul’s ability to grind out wins. He’s going to make Cerundolo hit a lot of extra balls, and he’ll also make the Argentinean work for a lot of his service games. Paul is one of the best returners on the planet. That could get to a player that relies a lot on precision.

On top of all that, this seems like a match in which the oddsmakers are daring you to bet Cerundolo. He has won the last two matches between these two, and he’s a little more accomplished than Paul at this point. But you can still get Cerundolo at some enticing odds. I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the public action in this one ends up being on Cerundolo, which is another reason to like Paul.

Bet: Paul ML (-178 – 2.5 units)
