MLB Player Props for Monday, April 8th

The 2024 MLB season is finally here. After another wild offseason and an exciting couple of weeks of Spring Training, we’re ready for some games that matter. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Monday, April 8th.

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays – 7:07 pm ET

Jose Berrios hasn’t had his best swing-and-miss stuff this year, as he has just eight strikeouts through two outings. But Berrios had to face the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros in his first two starts. Tonight, the righty gets a crack at a Mariners team that had the second-highest strikeout rate in the league against righties last year. And Seattle already has the highest strikeout rate in the league in 2024, by far. So, this is the perfect opportunity for Berrios to miss some bats and add to what has been a great start to the year for him. With that in mind, I’m not overthinking this. I’m taking the Over with today’s MLB player props, and I love that you can get plus-money odds on this.

Pick: Berrios Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+122)

Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies – 8:40 pm ET

My only hitter prop for today’s MLB player props story has me rooting for Charlie Blackmon. The veteran is off to a solid start to this season, as he’s batting .306 with a triple, three doubles and five RBIs. Blackmon will now face the electric Zac Gallen, but the 37-year-old has had success against him in the past. Blackmon is 10 for 35 with three doubles against Gallen in his career. And this game will be played at Coors Field, which is obviously the most hitter-friendly ballpark in the world. Gallen hasn’t been bad at Coors Field in his career, but this game has the highest total on the board. And I don’t think it’ll be one-way traffic. The Rockies saw Gallen already this season, so they should be able to adjust and get to him a bit here.

Pick: Blackmon Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBIS (-165)

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels – 9:38 pm ET

Zach Eflin has had at least five strikeouts in both of his starts this season. I like him to keep it rolling when he faces the Angels tonight. Last season, the Angels had the fifth-highest strikeout rate in baseball against righties. And things haven’t slowed down in 2024. They have the eight-highest strikeout rate in the league against righties this season, and the number is actually higher than it was last year. With that in mind, there’s no denying that this is a good matchup for Eflin. The righty also had 14 strikeouts over 11.0 innings against Los Angeles last season. So, he has had success in this matchup in the past — including a 10-strikeout performance against the Angels last September. Overall, this number just feels far too low and I’m firing it up for today’s MLB player props.

Pick: Eflin Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-132)
