Magic +5.5 (-105) vs. Raptors
Magic at Raptors – 7:30 pm ET
Tonight is the first night of Emirates NBA Cup action, so keep that in mind when you’re handicapping games. Point differential is huge for all of these teams, so you’re going to see some wacky stuff in the fourth quarter. Teams with big leads will push for even bigger leads, and that’ll end up playing with some results. That’s ultimately why I decided to stay away from games that aren’t expected to be close, though I will try to jump in on those later in group play. Betting alternate spreads with teams in need of lopsided victories can be profitable a little later in the event.
With that out of the way, let’s get into my actual plays. I’m kicking the night off with Orlando +5.5. This is a meeting between two depleted teams, as Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs are out for the Magic while Kawhi Leonard is out for the Raptors. That said, you don’t want to be handicapping these teams like they’re at full strength. So, why do I like Orlando? Well, it doesn’t hurt that the Magic lost by 30 against this Raptors team on Wednesday. If Orlando doesn’t show up after a miserable performance like that, what does that say about the group moving forward? Also, under Darko Rajakovic, Toronto is just 8-14 straight-up and 9-13 against the spread after a blowout win by 20 or more.
As far as the matchup goes, I do think last game’s outcome was a bit of a fluke. The Raptors shot 43% from three, despite the fact that they’re shooting 30.4% on the season. I also generally like Franz Wagner as a Scottie Barnes stopper, and having Anthony Black to throw on one of the guards should also help the Magic out here. On top of that, Toronto is one of the few teams in the league with a more questionable center rotation than Orlando.
I just don’t see much separating these two rosters, and I expect Sean Sweeney to be on point with his adjustments.
Suns +5.5 (-133 – 1.5 units) & Suns ML (+150 – 0.5 units) vs. Nuggets
Nuggets at Suns – 10:00 pm ET
Alright, I’ve been trying to be pretty good about backing off the Suns this year. As a Phoenix fan, I know I can be a little trigger-happy with this group, and I don’t want to be in the business of letting my fandom impact my picks. However, I simply can’t sit on the sidelines here. The Suns are coming into this game off three full days of rest, and they have played fewer games than anyone in basketball. Phoenix should be ready to come out with some purpose, and I expect the Suns to look pretty sharp against this Nuggets team.
Denver is currently just 25th in the NBA in points per 100 possessions (107.1), meaning this team isn’t operating like the kind of top-tier offense we have come to expect in the Nikola Jokic era. That’s troubling considering what this team has looked like defensively in recent years. I know they’re 14th in points allowed per 100 possessions (111.2) right now, but they should end the season as a bottom-10 defensive team — or dangerously close.
The Suns are off to a slow start this year, and they’re undoubtedly considering making some changes to their starting five. But it’d be pretty surprising if Phoenix doesn’t ultimately end up being a near-.500 team, and the Suns should look like the Suns of last year when taking on shaky competition. Sadly, I’d consider the Nuggets shaky right now.
Under Jordan Ott, Phoenix is 22-3 SU and 18-6-1 ATS when taking on teams being outscored by at least 3.0 points per game. The Suns are also 13-7 ATS as a home underdog with Ott on the sidelines. I think we’re in for a big Devin Booker performance — which might have to do with the fact that he and I are celebrating birthdays today — and I expect some of the role players to embrace a meeting with a team that can be lackadaisical defending off the ball.

PARLAY: Celtics ML vs. Bulls, Heat ML vs. Pacers, Lakers Alt +7.5 vs. Warriors (-111): This is a pretty random parlay for me, but I love the Heat to win outright. I also had a lean on the Lakers at -1.5, but I didn’t quite get there. So, I’m getting a little creative with an awkward three-teamer, using Celtics moneyline to get a price I like for the other two games.
