Super Bowl LVIII MVP Odds and Past Super Bowl MVP Winners

The parallels between Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVIII in terms of the Super Bowl MVP odds market are really interesting. While the Chiefs were favored (-1.5) in that game, Patrick Mahomes was around +110 to win the award and Jimmy Garoppolo was around +200. Raheem Mostert came in next at around +500.

With concerns ranging from mild to major about Brock Purdy, this year’s market pretty much mirrors the one we saw back in 2020. The presence of a stud running back like Christian McCaffrey also adds to the Purdy intrigue, but, as we know, the Super Bowl MVP is a quarterback-driven award.

  • Brock Purdy +225
  • Christian McCaffrey +475
  • Travis Kelce +1200
  • Deebo Samuel +2000
  • Isiah Pacheco +3000

  • Fred Warner +12000
  • L’Jarius Sneed +15000
  • Willie Gay +16000
  • All others +20000 or higher

Mahomes is the rightful favorite at +120 is a better number than what you can get on the Chiefs moneyline. Mahomes has two Super Bowl wins and two Super Bowl MVP wins. Before we go any further, let’s discuss that part of the equation.

Super Bowl MVP Winners by Position

  • QB: 32
  • RB: 7
  • WR: 8
  • Defense: 10
  • KR/PR: 1

Super Bowl XII had co-MVPs with Harvey Martin and Randy White, both defensive players.

Note that a tight end has never won the Super Bowl MVP. No TE has ever been Mr. Taylor Swift either.

Since 1998, which is the last time a running back won Super Bowl MVP (Terrell Davis, SB XXXII), here are the winners by position:

  • QB: 16
  • WR: 5
  • LB: 3
  • DB: 1

Sixteen of the last 25 Super Bowls have had a quarterback win the MVP award. We haven’t had a defensive player since Von Miller in Super Bowl 50, so it has either been a wide receiver (2) or quarterback (5) in each of the last seven Super Bowls.

Multiple Super Bowl MVP Winners

There are only six multiple Super Bowl MVP winners and all of them are quarterbacks, including Mahomes.

  • Tom Brady (36, 38, 49, 51, 55)
  • Joe Montana (16, 19, 24)
  • Bart Starr (1, 2)
  • Terry Bradshaw (13, 14)
  • Eli Manning (42, 46)
  • Patrick Mahomes (54, 57)

Note that Starr and Bradshaw are the only back-to-back winners. Brady won back-to-back Super Bowls in 38 and 39, but Deion Branch won the Super Bowl 39 MVP without scoring a touchdown (11 rec., 133 yards). Mahomes, of course, is the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
