Super Bowl LV betting: Odds, biggest wagers, notable bets

The Super Bowl is the biggest sports betting date of the year, and Super Bowl LV between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs will be no different.

Sports betting is now legal and operational in 20 U.S. states, including online in Virginia and Michigan in the past few weeks.

Betting action

Sunday: Our fourth $1 million wager — the first million-dollar wager on Kansas City — was just placed by a Nevada customer at a William Hill sportsbook. The bettor wagered $1.16 million on the Chiefs ML at -155 odds.

At noon ET, BetRivers sportsbooks had 64% of spread bets and 67% of spread handle on the Chiefs -3. Kansas City was also getting the very slight majority (51% of bets, 52% of handle) of moneyline wagers as well.

-On Sunday morning, another big Chiefs wager landed in Las Vegas, as one bettor wagered $325,000 on Kansas City -3 (EVEN) at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. The SuperBook had reduced juice on the game starting last night, so this was a great price for such a large bet.

Saturday: Betting action was fast and furious on Saturday, including the third million-dollar wager placed. One mobile bettor in Nevada placed a $1 million bet on the Bucs moneyline at %plussign% 135 odds on Saturday night. Circa Sports also reported taking a $500,000 wager on the Chiefs ML (-164) and Borgata (NJ) took a $281,000 bet on the Chiefs -3 (-115). Circa Sports also took a $250,000 bet on Chiefs -3.

Two interesting wagers came in at PointsBet Sportsbook:

– A $10,000 parlay on anytime TD for Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Chris Godwin and Mike Evans that would pay just over 11-1

-A $1,500 wager at 50-1 on the Buccaneers to not score any points

Friday: Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at The Borgata in New Jersey, tells me that they are seeing “a lot of Tampa Bay money on the moneyline.” They have moved off of Chiefs -3.5 to Chiefs -3 and dropped the Bucs ML to %plussign% 135.

-The Chiefs have 66% of the spread bets and 76% of the spread handle at William Hill US books as of Friday afternoon.

-Both QB passing yardage props have seen big increases at William Hill. Patrick Mahomes opened with an over/under of 315.5 passing yards, and currently sits at 331.5. Tom Brady had an O/U of 295.5 passing yards, which now sits at 305.5.

Thursday: DraftKings reported that Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale flew into Colorado and placed the largest reported Super Bowl LV on Wednesday night. Mattress Mack wagered $3.46 million on the Bucs %plussign% 3.5 as a hedge against another furniture store promotion he has running.

Wednesday: The biggest bet so far at DraftKings is a $200,000 wager on the Chiefs -3, which was placed on Monday.

-One interesting wager at PointsBet: A bettor wagered $10,000 that the opening kickoff would not be returned for a TD. If it happens, he’ll win $200.

-The second Super Bowl LV wager of over $500,000 was placed around noon PT on Monday, Feb. 1 at Caesars Palace in Nevada. One bettor wagered $520,000 on the Chiefs -3 (-120). The bet would win $433,333.35 if Kansas City covers.

Early action:

-The first million-dollar wager has been placed on Super Bowl LV, with one bettor wagering $2.3 million on the Bucs 3.5 (-115) at a BetMGM Nevada sportsbook. Jason Scott, BetMGM VP of trading, said in a release, “This was a bet we were very happy to receive. BetMGM had previously written several six figure bets all on the Chiefs and the public is certainly behind Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. This big Buccaneers bet has helped balance our book.”

-Sportsbooks have giant liability on the Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl, dating back to after last season when Tom Brady was a free agent. At BetMGM books, 9% of bets and 11% of the total Super Bowl futures pool was on Tampa Bay; 12% of tickets and 34% of handle is on Kansas City. Yet, BetMGM has twice as much liability on the Bucs to win Super Bowl LV.

-DraftKings reported majority of very early wagering on Kansas City, with 77% of the bets and 78% of the handle on the Chiefs spread. Despite the Over dropping, DraftKings also had 78% of the bets and 77% of the handle on Over 56.5.

-The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas posted the first Super Bowl LV line (Chiefs -3.5, total of 57.5) during the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game with the Chiefs leading 31-15 and possessing the ball. Kansas City went on to win the game 38-24.
