Fight night

The fight may be in Texas, but there is definitely a buzz here in Las Vegas.

Despite the unorthodox rules, the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul bout is drawing surprisingly heavy action from bettors. >>More from ESPN’s David Purdum.

On Thursday’s VSiN PrimeTime with Tim Murray, Circa owner Derek Stevens said the money was coming in hot on Tyson. That syncs with what we are seeing in the DraftKings splits with 73 percent of the bets on the former champion.

Beyond the 31-year age difference, other handicapping factors include 14-ounce gloves (instead of 10-ounce) and just eight two-minute rounds.

“They are fighting with pillows,” former NHL defenseman Darren Banks, a Circa casino VIP host, told Tim. “They are very big gloves. You will laugh when you see them.”

With Tyson at +200 and Paul at -235 as of Thursday night, Derek pointed out another possible wager: The draw at +1250. “That won’t last long.”

Being a sportsbook owner and all, Derek doesn’t usually call attention to bets like that. The +1250 lasted long enough for me to walk 20 yards to the window from the VSiN studio after Derek’s segment.

The fight will be broadcast on Netflix (main card starts at 8 p.m. ET). I watched the fine three-part Netflix documentary previewing the bout, so you don’t have to. My biggest takeaway came from the last episode: Paul, fighting as a heavyweight for the first time, seemed uncomfortable with the extra pounds.

On Thursday, Paul weighed in at 227 pounds — 27 pounds heavier than he was for his victory over Mike Perry in July — to Tyson’s 228.

But at least the fight is adhering to some conventions — a chaotic weigh-in with Tyson slapping Paul.

We’ve had a lot of good discussions on the fight this week, but I will point you to two:

>>Follow The Money hosts Mitch Moss and Pauly Howard handicap the fight and offer their betting strategies.

>>Pro bettor Bill Krackomberger tells A Numbers Game host Gill Alexander why he will bet on Paul.

As Gill says, though, “Proceed with caution.”
