Clemson vs. Georgia Tech Analysis

How much should two games matter? That’s an important question heading into this Week 3 matchup. Last year, Clemson allowed only 5.3 yards per play on the defensive side of the ball, which was a heck of a lot better than the 6.0 yards per play that Georgia Tech gave up. However, very little separated the teams offensively, with the Yellow Jackets averaging 6.1 yards per play and the Tigers averaging 6.0. That said, there was a pretty big overall advantage for Dabo Swinney’s team in 2024. On top of that, Clemson returned more production than any team in the country heading into 2025.

Considering the experience Swinney brought back from last year’s College Football Playoff team, you would think the Tigers would be head-and-shoulders above a team like the Yellow Jackets. However, Clemson has struggled mightily since the start of the new season. In Week 1, the team lost 17-10 in a home game against LSU, and Heisman hopeful Cade Klubnik completed just 19 of his 38 passes for 230 yards and zero touchdowns. He also threw a pick in that loss. Then, in what looked like a get-right spot against Troy last week, the Tigers only won by 11 as 30-point favorites. Simply put, things have looked off for two weeks now, and Swinney has publicly stated that the expectations might be getting to his players. And now, Clemson takes on a Georgia Tech team is 5-2 straight-up and 6-1 against the spread as an underdog of 3.5 to 10 points under Brent Key. The Yellow Jackets are also 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS as home underdogs in that span. They have been giant-killers since Key took over, and they’re definitely looking to add another to their mantle.

The line movement definitely suggests some major belief in Georgia Tech. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Clemson was a 7.5-point favorite on September 3rd, but the spread is down to 3.5 now. And our VSiN betting splits show that there’s public support for the Tigers, so there’s some important money bringing this thing down. Normally, I try to align myself with some of the sharpest bettors in the world, as those are the guys that win at a slightly higher percentage. However, this spread has dropped a little too much, and you can now get Clemson -2.5 at -140 at DraftKings. That’s where I’d be looking here.

It was concerning to see how Clemson played against Troy last week, but it’s still too early to give up on this team. The talent on both sides of the ball is too good, especially with decent coaches in place. And it’s not like Georgia Tech has looked great to start the year. The Yellow Jackets barely held on at Colorado to start the year, and that Buffaloes team has some real problems. And I’m not sure we can take anything away from a 59-12 win over Gardner-Webb last week. Georgia Tech should be pummeling FCS opponents, so it shouldn’t surprise anybody that it happened.

Of course, slowing down Haynes King, one of the country’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks, won’t be easy. But Clemson has what it takes to do that. The Tigers are stacked along the defensive line, and they have a number of productive pass-rushers. They should be able to keep an eye on him at all times without sacrificing the integrity of their defense. Clemson also happens to have a good group of defensive backs, which is important against a Georgia Tech team that has some good pass-catchers.

What this really boils down to for me is that I don’t have a lot of faith in the Yellow Jackets to stop the Tigers. Sure, Clemson has looked bad offensively through two weeks, but I’m not putting much into that. We all saw Klubnik and the Tigers score at least 40 points on six separate occasions last season. This Garrett Riley offense is going to work; it’s just a matter of when. And I don’t see any reason it can’t start humming against a Yellow Jackets defense that hasn’t proven anything.

Clemson vs. Georgia Tech Prediction

I’m not laying 3.5 in this game, as it wouldn’t surprise me if it ends up being close. But at 2.5, which is pretty damn close to a play on Clemson to win, I’ll take my chances. Winning at Georgia Tech has been tough on road teams since Key took over, but the Tigers are talented and experienced. They’re also generally well-prepared. Realistically, Clemson should be up for the challenge. And generally speaking, nobody should be surprised if some of the early-season takes about this Tigers team look silly in a couple of weeks.

Bet: Clemson -2.5 (-140)
