College Football Betting Systems for Weeks 0 and 1:
I’ve made a habit of studying data for VSiN readers and unveiling foundational betting systems that they can employ in their handicapping routines. I tend to look for specific line ranges, types of games, and the point in the season when games were played as the foundation for these strategies. For instance, the opening weeks of the college football season present interesting matchups each year, and the prices set by oddsmakers can give bettors valuable insight into how the “experts” are evaluating the games. I first dug into this material a few years ago and have since had some good success playing the findings. I’m here now to update the analysis after adding last year’s results. You’ll see I’ve once again qualified this year’s games that match these systems.
It’s typically believed that bookmakers are the ones “in the know” and set their lines for specific reasons. In turn, professionals bet heavily on those lines, putting an equal amount of work into prepping for the season. By following the lead of these two groups, all bettors should be able to take advantage. I feel that studying the results of games against the lines does that.
With that in mind, when I first conducted this study, I set out to find whether or not there were any relatively simple systems or concepts that bettors can take advantage of in the opening week(s) of the college football season. I consider these opening week(s) as Week 0 and Week 1. These systems are in addition to the COLLEGE FOOTBALL STABILITY SYSTEM plays that I will be releasing for this week and the additional first three full weeks.
After studying the Week 0/1 games for the last 13 seasons, I was able to come up with nine different betting concepts that you might want to consider as you break down the games this week. I believe each has a solid foundation, and I will explain that as I reveal the systems and the games in play for 2026.
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #1: Huge home favorites (-36 points or more) have been outstanding in FBS vs. FBS matchups in the opening week(s) of college football since 2013, going 23-0 SU and 18-5 ATS (78.3%)!
Steve’s thoughts: When the opening week lines approach this lofty favorite level, it’s clear that oddsmakers perceive a massive difference between two teams in talent. In addition, the better team was always playing at home in these games as well, and that comes with an additional level of motivation, as these hosts are anxious to get their promising seasons off to a good start against an opponent that is essentially powerless to stop them. The result has been easy wins and point spread covers, with these games producing an average score of 54.3-8.3 on games with average lines of -39.
Teams qualifying for 2025: There are six games with massive lines for this year in Weeks 0/1, all officially qualifying at this point. That is much more than average since there have only been 23 in 13 seasons. These are the huge favorites that are expected to roll in their openers:
Week 0
USC (-38.5) vs. San Jose State
Week 1
OKLAHOMA (-41.5) vs. UTEP
INDIANA (-40.5) vs. North Texas
OHIO STATE (-50.5) vs. Ball State
SOUTH CAROLINA (-36.5) vs. Kent State
TEXAS A&M (-40.5) vs. Missouri State
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #2: Home field advantage means a lot in early-season games in the rare opportunities when G5 teams host P4 non-conference foes. The hosts in these matchups have proven quite competitive, going 19-34 SU but 33-20 ATS (62.3%) over the last 13 seasons.
Steve’s thoughts: As I indicated in #1 above, there is a lot of motivation that comes from playing at home in the opening week(s) of the college football season. Particularly when the opening week(s) foe is a bigger-name school that gives the host a chance to make a name for itself. Interestingly, these hosts are 23-8 ATS (74.2%) when playing as dogs of 6 points or more.
Teams qualifying for 2026: With money becoming a bigger factor than ever in college sports, these games are becoming more and more rare each season. However, there is one spot for Week 1 as Tulsa hosts a completely remade Oklahoma State team.
Oklahoma State at TULSA (+14.5)
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #3: In addition to #2 above, be careful with the P4 vs. G5 non-conference games in Week 0/1 when the P4 home favorite isn’t expected to overwhelm the opponent, as the visiting G5 teams have proven heavily motivated to cover point spreads in recent years. In fact, this trend has turned dramatically since 2023, as P4 home favorites of -30 or fewer points are 41-5 SU vs. G5 teams in weeks 0/1 but just 17-29 ATS (37%) over the last three seasons.
Steve’s thoughts: You have to figure that these P4 home favorites aren’t entirely aroused by hosting a would-be overmatched smaller conference foe. In addition, oddsmakers also tend to put extra pressure on the bigger conference school, assuming they will take care of business and pricing the game accordingly. Everyone assumes the athletic department budget difference will be the deciding factor. However, these are the first real competitive games these teams play, and it takes some time to get into a rhythm. You often see very slow starts from P4 teams in these games. What used to be an easy contest has turned out not to be recently.
Teams qualifying for 2026: By my count, 16 Week 0/1 games are scheduled in Week 1 that pit Group of 5 conference teams on the road at Power 4 foes with lines of -30 or less. Here they are:
HAWAII +5.5 at Stanford (Week 0)
AKRON +23.5 at Wake Forest
TOLEDO +10 at Michigan State
FRESNO STATE +22.5 at USC
EAST CAROLINA +28.5 at Alabama
OREGON STATE +20.5 at Houston
OHIO U +23.5 at Nebraska
COASTAL CAROLINA +21.5 at West Virginia
MIAMI (OH) +16.5 at Pittsburgh
BOISE STATE +24.5 at Oregon
MARSHALL +24.5 at Penn State
TULANE +9.5 at Duke
WESTERN MICHIGAN +28.5 at Michigan
LA MONROE +28.5 at Mississippi State
FLORIDA ATLANTIC +28.5 at Florida
WASHINGTON STATE +22.5 at Washington
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #4: The most small of favorites and hefty favorites win the early neutral field showdowns between non-conference Power 4 foes, as those laying less 3.5 points or fewer are on a 11-4 SU and 10-4-1 ATS (71.4%) run since 2013, while those laying 12.5 points or more have gone 13-0 SU and 10-3 ATS (76.9%) in that same time frame.
Steve’s thoughts: Oddsmakers have put in the work. They know how these teams stack up against one another. Particularly with the well-covered Power 4 teams. In the expectedly tight neutral field games or the expected blowouts, trust them; they usually lead you to water. That said, if you’re wondering about the favorites “in between,” those laying -4 to -12 are just 9-15 ATS (37.5%), so choose wisely. Another thing to consider here is that all of these games have gone Under the total at a 25-15 (60%) rate since ’16.
Teams qualifying for 2026: There are just four week 0/1 non-conference Power 4 tilts to consider, and only one qualifies in the line ranges needed to back the chalk, that being Notre Dame, who takes on Wisconsin from Lambeau Field on 9/6. The other three neutral field favorites are fade options based upon recent history.
Power 4 non-conference NEUTRAL games qualifying
ON NOTRE DAME (-20.5) vs. Wisconsin
AGAINST TCU (-7.5) vs. North Carolina
AGAINST AUBURN (-7) vs. Baylor
AGAINST OLE MISS (-6.5) vs. Louisville
AND UNDER the total in ALL FOUR games
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #5: In general, laying more than a field goal in Weeks 0/1 with road favorites has not been a rewarding strategy, as these teams have gone 74-26 SU but just 41-58-1 ATS (41.4%).
Steve’s thoughts: There is a lot of motivation that comes from playing at home in the opening week(s) of the college football season. Teams are excited, fans are excited, and you can generally feel the extra “juice” in the home stadiums. It’s enhanced when the home team believes it has a shot at an upset win. Remember, in most cases, you are only trusting that the oddsmakers have the right team favored, or favored by what they should be. Neither of the teams has passed an on-the-field test yet. Laying points on the road with those conditions doesn’t make foundational sense.
Teams qualifying for 2026: By my count, six games lined up for Weeks 0/1 featuring true road favorites playing in what could be more difficult environments than perceived. Several of these teams could see their season prospects flushed with a key early loss. Consider that with home underdog covers comes the possibility of outright upsets as well. Highlight these road favorite games when starting your handicapping routine and consider the thought that these “better teams” will be facing highly motivated home dogs.
AGAINST MIAMI (FL) -24.5 at Stanford
AGAINST OKLAHOMA STATE -14.5 at Tulsa
AGAINST UNLV -3 at Hawaii
AGAINST UCLA -1.5 at California
AGAINST WESTERN KENTUCKY at Nevada
AGAINST SMU -2.5 at Florida State
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #6: Week 0/1 games between P4 conference opponents in weeks 0/1 have been ridiculously low-scoring since 2021, producing 14 Unders, 6 Overs (70% Under) and 46.8 PPG on average since 2021.
Steve’s thoughts: Opening week(s) conference games have the same stakes as those played later in the season. Those stakes are high and they lead to more intense, lower-scoring games. I have to reiterate, this is the first actual live action for these teams, and in my opinion, that gives the defense the edge. The average totals for these games were set at 51.7, and they are producing nearly five PPG fewer. This makes for a good opportunity to find some easy totals winners.
P4 Conference Games for Weeks 0/1 of 2026:
Week 0
NC State-Virginia UNDER 53.5
Week 1
Miami (FL)-Stanford UNDER 48.5
SMU-Florida State UNDER 53.5
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #7: Oddsmakers are leading you to water on low-totaled games in Weeks 0/1, especially with bigger favorites, as in games with totals of 48.5 or less and a favorite of 4 points or more, Under the total is 49-22 (69%) since 2013.
Steve’s thoughts: Remember, it is the oddsmakers that study these teams extensively throughout the offseason. When they find that teams aren’t going to be very explosive offensively, they basically tell you so by setting their opening totals low. As proof, the underdogs of +4 or more in these games have scored just around 13.8 PPG. When only one of the teams is capable of scoring, you don’t get too many Overs. Considering that the average college total has been in the 54ish range for the last decade-plus, a total of 48.5 or less may seem appetizing for an Over play, but it’s proven to be a profitable strategy to avoid that temptation. See low, expect low.
Games with totals of 48.5 or less and one team favored by 4 points or more qualifying for 2026: There are eight games officially qualifying as Under plays as of press time:
Week 0
North Carolina-TCU UNDER 4.75
Jacksonville State-North Dakota State UNDER 46.5
Hawaii-Stanford UNDER 48.5
Week 1
Miami (FL)-Stanford UNDER 48.5
Ohio U-Nebraska UNDER 47.5
Western Michigan-Michigan UNDER 47.5
Central Michigan-New Mexico UNDER 47.5
Wisconsin-Notre Dame UNDER 47.5
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #8: Non-conference games between Group of 5 opponents involving home underdogs in Weeks 0/1 have been explosive, particularly when not expected to be. In fact, since 2013, when totals on these games involving home dogs (or pick ’ems) are 64 or less, the result has been 23 Overs, 11 Unders (67.6%).
Steve’s thoughts: There is a reason teams are home underdogs in Weeks 0/1, particularly when the opponents are from relatively even-matched conference levels. They are expected to be overmatched. While these home dogs do score relatively well (25.6 PPG), they tend to give up a lot of points as well (34.5), and with a record of 11-23 outright in these contests, they are often playing catch-up in the second half. This naturally leads to Overs. On totals averaging 54.5 PPG, these 60.1 PPG scored are a nice cushion for Over bettors.
Group of 5 games with totals of 64 or less and the host playing as a pick ’em or underdog qualifying for 2026: There are just two games officially qualifying as Over plays as of press time.
UNLV-Hawaii OVER 58.5
Western Kentucky-Nevada OVER 53.5
CFB Week 0/1 Betting Concept #9: Non-conference games between Group of 5 opponents featuring a home favorite have been unexpectedly lower scoring, producing 40 Unders, 24 Overs (62.5%) since 2013.
Steve’s thoughts: In concept #7 above, I noted that the home underdogs in these Group of 5 non-conference games were able to produce enough points consistently to benefit Over bettors. It has been the opposite when the underdogs are on the road, as in that same 12-year time span, these early-season dogs have produced 22.3 PPG. This has resulted in a majority of these games going Under their respective totals.
Group of 5 games with the host playing as a favorite qualifying for 2026: There are 10 games officially qualifying as UNDER plays as of press time.
Week 0
Jacksonville State-North Dakota State OVER 46.5
Sacramento State-Eastern Michigan OVER 52.5
Memphis-UNLV OVER 57.5
Week 1
San Jose State-Eastern Michigan OVER 53.5
Liberty-James Madison OVER 52.5
Wyoming-Colorado State OVER 48.5
Florida International-South Florida OVER 54.5
Arkansas State-Memphis OVER 55.5
Sam Houston State-Troy OVER 51.5
Central Michigan-New Mexico OVER 47.5
