North Carolina State Wolfpack at Stanford Cardinal – Friday at 10:30 pm ET
This is an interesting one to me. For whatever reason, I have had Stanford a couple of times this year, and I have seen enough to know that this isn’t a bad football team. Some of Stanford’s numbers are undoubtedly skewed by blowout losses to Wake Forest and Notre Dame, but the Cardinal have handled themselves well in games against teams on their level of competition. Well, this feels like one of those games.
This season, NC State is barely inside the Top 75 in Net EPA/Play (0.04), and the team also happens to be ranked No. 124 in EPA/Play Allowed (0.21). This is a very bad football team, making it hard to understand why Stanford can’t keep things tight in a home game under the lights.
When Stanford plays against weak football teams, the Cardinal have the ability to pound the rock. Then, that opens things up for an underrated passing game.
The only thing really working in NC State’s favor here is the fact that the team is coming off a bye week. But Dave Doeren’s teams generally fall apart after the first month in the season, and I see this being a tough one for the road team. So, give me Stanford to keep this within one touchdown. I’ll also sprinkle the moneyline.
Bet: Stanford +7.5 (-135 – 1.5 units) & Stanford ML (+210 – 0.5 units)
Kansas State Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils – 3:45 pm ET
This season, both of these teams are 4-2 to the Over. Kansas State actually sits at No. 29 in the nation in Net Adjusted EPA/Play (0.13), as Avery Johnson and his dual-threat skill set make the Wildcats extremely tough to stop. So, in a meeting with a shaky Sun Devils defense, you can count on the road team putting up a ton of points.
Arizona State should also look good offensively in this one. I thought Kenny Dillingham did well to bring Cutter Boley over from Kentucky, but it hasn’t worked out. He’ll now turn to 23-year-old Mikey Keene, who has started a ton of games in his career. Keene doesn’t offer long-term upside for this team, as this will be his last year in Tempe. However, he’s more than capable of executing a game plan and distributing the ball to his playmakers — and doing so on time.
I just don’t think we’re going to see much success from either defense in this game, and it seems like the sharps agree. Our betting splits pages show that smart bettors are driving this number up.
