Michigan vs. Oklahoma Analysis
Oklahoma beat up on Illinois State last week, winning 35-3 in a game in which new Sooners quarterback John Mateer threw for 392 yards with three touchdowns and added another score on the ground. Mateer was one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation with Washington State, and he followed his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, to Norman. People now expect the combination of a dangerous offense and a Brent Venables defense to do some damage in the SEC. And there’s a lot of love for Oklahoma to make a statement against Michigan.
The Wolverines are pretty similar to the Sooners. They were a good defensive team a year ago, but they were miserable at the quarterback position. So, Michigan went out and added an instant-impact freshman in five-star recruit Bryce Underwood. And Underwood didn’t take long to impress, as he threw for 251 yards and a touchdown against New Mexico. That 251 yards was more than any Wolverines quarterback threw for in a single game in 2024. Underwood didn’t do anything too spectacular, but he looked poised, he was accurate and he simply didn’t look like a freshman. That bodes well heading into Week 2. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about Underwood here.
No matter how good a freshman quarterback is, it’s tough to go on the road early in your career and win in a tough environment. We saw Arch Manning look miserable against Ohio State in The Shoe last week, and Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr also had some rough moments against Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. Well, how can we be sure that Underwood is up for this meeting with Oklahoma? Venables is one of the sharpest defensive coaches on the planet, he’s aggressive as a play caller when he needs to be and his team has some serious talent at all three levels. Don’t be shocked if the Oklahoma pass rush, led by Mason Thomas, puts Underwood in some difficult spots, leading to either sacks or turnovers.
I also don’t think the Michigan defense will be able to keep Mateer and Co. down for long. The Wolverines are stacked on that side of the ball, and I love the way Wink Martindale calls games. But Mateer is so good at extending plays with his legs that there will surely be some defensive breakdowns here and there. And when they come, Mateer will make them pay.
I’d also argue that the jury is still out on Sherrone Moore, who is just 6-8 against the spread as a head coach with Michigan. He still has to prove he has what it takes to continue pushing Jim Harbaugh’s program forward. And Venables has been good in spots like these with Oklahoma. The Sooners are 4-0 both straight-up and ATS in home games with totals between 42.5 and 49 under Venables. They’re also 15-2 SU and 10-7 ATS as home favorites with Venables at the helm, according to StatSharp.
Michigan vs. Oklahoma Prediction
I won’t be jumping on anything in this game, as it’s a little out of the range in which I’d be comfortable backing Oklahoma. However, for those that want action on this box-office showdown, I feel it’s Sooners or nothing. There’s a chance Oklahoma’s offense gets hot, and I don’t think Michigan has the firepower to keep up right now. I might have felt differently if this game was being played a little later in the season.
Lean: Oklahoma -4.5 (-110)
