Tuley’s Takes: Week 6 College Football Best Bets and Predictions:
We’re still trying to figure out how we’re already handicapping our college football Week 6 best bets here in the Tuley’s Takes home office, but here we are.
After a hot start to the CFB season (which fortunately turned to the NFL after we cooled off here), we’ve been trading money lately as we went 2-2 ATS last Saturday with wins on UL-Lafayette +3.5 in 41-38 win at Wake Forest and UL-Monroe +7 in 13-9 win at Troy while losing with Buffalo +5.5 in 47-3 loss at UConn (ouch, but only counts as one loss) and New Mexico State +9 in 50-40 loss vs. New Mexico. That’s our second 9-point dog to lose by exactly 10 points and is the difference between profitability and losing the vig as we stayed at .500 overall at 9-9 ATS.

Anyway, the hope here is that with the calendar turning to October that we have learned enough about these teams to get back on the winning track. I have three (hopefully) live dogs for this Saturday.
SMU +6.5 at Louisville
Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET (ESPN)
I was proud when my alma mater, Northern Illinois, upset No. 5 Notre Dame back on Sept. 7, but let’s be objective here, NIU doesn’t have a great team (and has lost to Buffalo and NC State the last two weeks), so I don’t give too much credit to Louisville for only losing 31-24 to the Fighting Irish. And I certainly don’t think they should be favored by nearly a touchdown over a 4-1 SMU team that just routed Florida State 42-16. OK, beating the Seminoles ain’t that big of a deal this year, either, but you know what I’m saying. This should be a close game throughout and come down to one possession.
Week 6 College Football Best Bet: SMU +6.5
James Madison at Louisiana-Monroe +16.5
Saturday, 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPNU)
After winning with both of my plays on University of Louisiana universities last week (and on UL-Monroe for the second straight week), I’m sure no regular readers are not surprised that I’m back on the Warhawks again this week. Readers might also recall that we won with James Madison +10.5 two weeks ago in the Dukes’ 70-50 outright upset of North Carolina, so I feel I have a pretty good handle on both these teams. While I certainly like James Madison and what the offense has accomplished, I believe the market still isn’t respecting this UL-Monroe team enough (the defense is allowing just 20 points per game, albeit against weaker competition). I’m counting on them to stay within two scores.
Week 6 College Football Best Bet: Louisiana-Monroe +16.5
Michigan +2.5 at Washington
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC)
Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL, but it’s not like he left the cupboard bare (even though these teams aren’t what we saw when they met for the national title in January). After beating Northwestern in its Big 10 debut, Washington lost 21-18 at Rutgers last Saturday for its second loss of the season after losing the Apple Cup to rival Washington State three weeks ago. Michigan has looked stronger overall and I’m not so sure the right team is favored here (as I’ve written several times in all sports, we believe too much stock is still being put in “home-field advantage”). Even though I give the edge in the passing game to the Huskies’ Will Rogers, I’ll side with the Wolverines’ ground game with Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards and call for the minor upset.
Week 6 College Football Best Bet: Michigan +2.5
