With renovations going on at Belmont Park, the 2024 Belmont Stakes will actually be run at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday June 8. Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Preakness Stakes winner Seize The Grey are among the 10 horses in the field.

Belmont Stakes entries for June 8, 2024

This is a loaded field of 3-year-olds. As mentioned, Mystik Dan and Seize The Grey have already won Triple Crown races. Sierra Leone ran second in the Kentucky Derby and Mystik Dan was second in the Preakness. Antiquarian was something of a surprise winner of the Peter Pan Stakes, where The Wine Steward was the favorite a few weeks ago and ran second. Resilience, Honor Marie, and Dornoch all ran in the Kentucky Derby as well. Second favorite Mindframe was impressive in a maiden in March at Gulfstream and an allowance in Race 3 at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day.

The prize purse has been increased to $2 million for this year’s race, the first installment of the Belmont Stakes to run somewhere other than Belmont Park since 1967 when the fifth and final version was run at Aqueduct to account for construction in Elmont.

Because of the smaller size of the main track at Saratoga, we’ll have to put an asterisk on this year’s Belmont, as the race will be run at 1 ¼ miles instead of the traditional 1 ½ miles. This marks just the second time since 1925 that the race has been run at a different distance. The 2020 Belmont Stakes was 1 ⅛ miles due to COVID. That race was still run in June, with the other Triple Crown races later in the year.

Stay tuned, as we’ll have lots of Belmont Stakes weekend horse racing coverage, including Friday and Saturday best bets and previews from Mike Somich, Ed Sehon, Dave Tuley, and Adam Burke, plus Adam’s full preview of the Acorn Stakes.
