While the “Dirt Mile” properly implies that the race is on dirt, the Breeders’ Cup Mile is a little bit ambiguous in its wording. But, it is a turf race and we’ve got expert handicapper “Mr. Ed” Sehon’s handicap on this one.
First, a brief intro into the Mile, which features 13 horses this time around. It is open to ages 3 and up and this year’s race only features a trio of 3-year-olds, as Sahlan, The Lion In Winter, and Jonquil are all international contenders that have shipped in for the event.
The Breeders’ Cup Mile will be Race 10 in your Saturday Del Mar program with post time expected to be 7:05 p.m. ET on November 1.

| 3 | Sahlan | M. Barzalona | F. Graffard | 6-1 |

| 7 | Johannes | U. Rispoli | T. Yakteen | 8-1 |

| 9 | Argine | L. Dettori | M. Nakauchida | 20-1 |
| 10 | Jonquil | C. Keane | A. Balding | 10-1 |

| 12 | Gas Me Up | J. Ortiz | K. Attard | 30-1 |
| 13 | Qirat | R. Ryan | R. Beckett | 20-1 |
Notable Speech ran third in this race last year behind Johannes and More Than Looks. Johannes will take another run at it, and despite a better finish last year, the Tim Yakteen trainee has longer odds than Notable Speech.
Rispoli gets the assignment on Johannes, but he’s also been riding Formidable Man lately, who has three wins this year and six wins in six races on the Del Mar turf. International horses are all over this field and they always get some love.
Here are VSiN expert horseplayer Ed Sehon’s thoughts on the race:
Three horses tower above all others in the international field. The third of three is #5 PROGRAM TRADING (10-1) for NY-based super-trainer Chad Brown, who retains savvy jockey Flavien Prat. The British-born 5YO roan with a stellar record of 9-5-3-0, literally has never run a bad race while banking $1.5 million.
My Place pick is British-born #2 NOTABLE SPEECH (5-2). The ultra-consistent chestnut colt is trained by exceptional British conditioner Charley Appleby and ridden by excellent jockey William Buick, the only rider the 4YO has ever known.
My top selection is #11 RHETORICAL (5-1), trained by young Will Walden and ridden by super jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. The gelding’s come-from-behind Grade 1 upset victory a month ago at Keeneland convinced me he’s yet to reach his full potential. My No. 1 pick.
