Mr. Ed’s Gulfstream Picks for Saturday, February 8:
TRACKING MR. ED: Players who have come here looking for top jocks Irad Ortiz Jr. and improving Dylan Davis are both out of luck. They took one look at today’s Gulfstream sparse 12-race card and hailed an Uber to the coast (Tampa Bay Downs). They neglected to tell Mr. Ed, leaving him behind to stew in his Gulfstream PP chowder while Irad and Dylan enjoyed sipping their mojitos while chowing down on tacos. Bon Appetit! It will be interesting to see how they fare at Mr. Ed’s favorite, hospitable small track. I’ll be monitoring their TBD results. Let’s take a look at Mr. Ed’s Gulfstream picks.
Mr. Ed’s Selections at Gulfstream for Saturday, February 8
Race 1 (12:20 p.m. ET/9:20 a.m. PT) — $31K CLAIMING for 4YOs & up going a mile on turf
Nothing makes Mr. Ed happier than hitting the Daily Double. I like my chances with a trio: #6 GENERAL’S DUTY (10-1 morning line) with improving young rider David Egan; #7 ALLEY OOP JOHNNY (2-1) with HOF rider Javier Castellano, and #8 OCALA DREAM (5-2) with local jock Edgard Zayas.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $5 Daily Doubles of 6,7,8/11,12. ($30)
Race 2 (12:49 p.m. ET/9:49 a.m. PT) — $25K MAIDEN CLAIMING for 4YOs & up going 1 1/16 mile on synthetic surface
I like #11 LIVE TO RIDE (7-2 morning line) and #12 (4-1) FIRST SHOT FIRED with popular Florida rider Emisael Jaramillo.
Race 4 (1:50 p.m. ET/10:50 a.m. PT) — $95K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for 3YOs going a mile on turf
Mr. Ed finds a lot to like about #10 EXCITE (9-2 morning line). Top trainer Mott, sharp rider Rosario, first-time Lasix and a pair of bullet works. Go to the windows, do not pass GO, and add to your bankroll. Mr. Ed is excited by his prospects.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $20 to Win. ($20)
Race 5 (2:20 p.m. ET/11:20 a.m PT) — $22K CLAIMING for 4YO fillies and mares going 6 furlongs
Mr. Ed likes #5 CHAINA (3-1 morning line) for sharp JK Sweezey barn. Miguel Angel Vasquez gets the mount as stretch out should be OK.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $10 to Win. ($10)
Race 8 (3:50 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT) — $94K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for 3YOs going 6 furlongs
I like three: #1 MULTIVERSE (9-2 morning line) for young trainer Riley Mott, who retains Drayden Van Dyke. Inner-most post adds to the appeal. #5 CRUDO (4-1) and #11 CAPTAIN EDDIE (8-1), recently gelded. Zayas stays aboard.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $5 Exacta Box. ($30)
Races 9-11 (4:20 p.m. ET/1:20 p.m. PT) — $1 PICK 3
R9: 1,4
R10: 2,3,7,9
R11:4,6,8 ($24)
Race 10 (4:49 p.m. ET/1:49 p.m. PT) — $140K LADIES TURF SPRINT for fillies and mares, 4YOs & up going 5 furlongs on turf
Mr. Ed cares for #7 JUST A CARE (9-5 morning line) for trainer Brian Lynch, who gets Luis Saez to return to the saddle. The mare loves Gulfstream sod. If she breaks, she’s gone.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $10 Win. ($10)
TOTAL WAGERS: $124
SATURDAY AT GULFSTREAM: As expected, racing at Gulfstream was actually worse than expected. The average $2.00 Win ticket paid $6.80, with no jockey or trainer winning more than one race. As for Mr. Ed, he was shut out at the windows. He was last seen with his thumb out westbound on the Tamiami Trail, hoping to join Irad and Dylan.
