Preakness Stakes, Laurel Park, Race #13
With the second Jewel of the Triple Crown on the line, let’s go price hunting. I’ve been interested in #5 Talkin for the last couple races, but was not happy with the rides. Trainer Danny Gargan agrees, making the switch from Rosario to Ortiz. I expect Talkin to sit back off a hot pace. The talent has always been there and he is third off the layoff and back to 100% after a battle with a cold earlier in the season. The 20-1 is the icing on the cake.
#1 Taj Mahal is undefeated going three for three all here at Laurel Park. He has been on the lead going two turns the last two races but was able to pass horses in his first career start. The post could be an issue, but if he can rate here, he is a logical contender.
#12 Incredibolt is one of the few that wheels back in two weeks from the Kentucky Derby and this race sets up well for him. All reports are great in the AM so I do not see the quick turnaround as an issue so he should be a player here.
#13 Great White was supposed to be in the gate at Churchill, but an incident before the race forced him to scratch. If he can run like he did at Turfway Park, sitting off the pace and making a move on the far turn, then he is a player. If he gets caught up in the early pace then it will end his day early. At 15-1, I am willing to find out.
