Mr. Ed’s Saratoga Picks for Sunday, July 20:
TRACKING MR. ED: Veteran jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. led the way with three winners on the 12-race card. Other repeat winners were Joel Rosario and out-of-towner Paco Lopez, each with two apiece. As for trainers, twelve races and twelve different conditioners had a win. At the windows, the average $2 Win ticket returned just shy of $10. In the feature race at the Spa, SCOTTISH LASIE ($6.70) upset odds-on favorite Immersive. Meanwhile, at Monmouth on the New Jersey shore, post-time favorite JOURNALISM got up the final strides to capture the Haskell Stakes, paying $2.80 to win. Word on the backstretch is that he will duck a rematch with Sovereignty in the Travers at the end of the month at Saratoga and head out to the West Coast to run in the Pacific Classic as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup in November. As for today, Day 9 of the 40-day meet, features a 10-race card with Race 9, the $200K G2 HONORABLE MISS STAKES in the spotlight. Unfortunately, the weather forecast calls for a 70% chance of rain, so be prepared for multiple scratches. Here’s a look at Mr. Ed’s plays.

LESSON LEARNED: When Mr. Ed was still a juvenile horseplayer, upon studying the PPs of an upcoming race at Finger Lakes, he said to his seasoned mentor, “Look at this. The #1 horse shipping in from the Saratoga has the same rider he had there. That obviously means the connections are well-intended.” Upon which he replied, “Someone had to drive the van.”
