Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Wednesday, August 23rd:
Miami Marlins at San Diego Padres (-135, 7.5)
This has been a tough season for Sandy Alcantara, who is 6-10 with a 4.11 ERA after having gone 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA in 2022. For the most part, Alcantara just hasn’t looked like an ace consistently for Miami, but he does occasionally show up and pitch at a high level. And I think he’ll do it tonight, with this game coming against a hot-and-cold Padres offense.
This play also doesn’t call for Alcantara to even shut this San Diego offense down. I just want him to go out and pitch at least 6.1 innings, which he did when he faced the Padres back on May 30th. Alcantara has also gone Over this outs recorded total in three of his last five starts. So, I don’t see him having any problems doing so here. Alcantara also happens to have a very long leash. He threw 116 pitches a few games ago, so the Marlins haven’t been quick to pull him.
Bet: Alcantara Over 18.5 Outs Recorded (+100)
Colorado Rockies at Tampa Bay Rays (-278, 8)
Austin Gomber is a pitcher that I normally like to fade, but he’s a lot better on the road than he is at home. And I happen to like this matchup with the Rays tonight. Tampa Bay has the 10th-highest strikeout rate in the league since the start of July, so this is a team that hasn’t been as solid when it comes to avoiding strikeouts recently. With that in mind, I was a little surprised to see that you can get +125 odds on Gomber to reach five strikeouts tonight.
Gomber isn’t a pitcher that normally goes out and misses a ton of bats, but he has had at least five strikeouts on seven occasions this year. And he has just been dialed in on the road recently, giving up two or fewer earned runs in each of his last four away starts. So, I’m taking a shot on him to stay hot and give this Tampa Bay offense more problems than expected.
Bet: Gomber Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+125)
Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros (-112, 8.5)
Chris Sale has made two starts since returning from a stint on the IL, and he didn’t make it out of the fifth inning in either of them. On top of Sale just not looking fully comfortable out there, that also puts a lot of stress on Boston’s bullpen. And that’s a group of relievers that hasn’t been all that great this season. With that in mind, I do think there’s some potential for the Astros to produce at the plate tonight. And I think Jose Altuve is one guy that could have a big game.
Altuve has hit Sale extremely hard throughout his career, as he’s 10 for 34 with a double and three homers off the lefty. Altuve has also been at his best against lefties in the past, so I think he’ll be looking forward to seeing a southpaw out there. That said, look for Altuve to either come through with a few base hits or just make one of them count.
Bet: Altuve Over 1.5 Total Bases (+110)
