MLB Player Props for Thursday, May 9

The 2024 MLB season is finally here. After another wild offseason and an exciting couple of weeks of Spring Training, we’re ready for some games that matter. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Thursday, May 9th.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Cincinnati Reds – 1:10 pm ET

It’s no secret that I like to back pitchers to go Over their strikeout totals against the Reds, and I’m not going away from it with Slade Cecconi today. The number is sitting at an extremely low number, as Cecconi would cash at plus-money odds if he whiffs five batters here. And I just don’t see any reason the 24-year-old can’t do it. Cecconi had eight strikeouts against the Seattle Mariners on April 27th, and that was a very similar matchup. Seattle is currently the worst team in the league when it comes to strikeout rate against right-handed pitching, but Cincinnati is right there with the second-worst mark in MLB. Both lineups have a lot of guys that chase pitches, so I’m counting on Cecconi to take advantage of that.

Pick: Cecconi Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+115)

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies – 3:10 pm ET

I had Jordan Hicks to go Over 4.5 strikeouts against the Rockies yesterday, but I’m fading the Giants starter today. Keaton Winn is taking the ball for San Francisco here, and the righty is coming off a start in which he gave up five earned runs on four hits in 0.2 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. He was chased in the first inning of that game. Of course, the Phillies are a lot better offensively than the Rockies. But this game also happens to be at Coors Field. And if Winn is giving up hard contact, he’s going to get himself in trouble here. Also, the price you have to pay to take this Over is just extremely reasonable. So, even though Colorado has been a nightmare offensively this year, this is just too good to pass up.

Pick: Winn Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-120)

Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Angels – 9:38 pm ET

I’m usually pretty quick to back the Royals offense, as I think they have one of the most underrated lineups in the league. But I’m actually fading Kansas City tonight, as I like Reid Detmers to find some success and work deep in this game. The reality is that the Royals might have a lot of talent, but they struggle against left-handed pitching. This season, only three teams in baseball have a lower wRC+ against lefties, and Kansas City is only batting .230 against southpaws. So, this is a lineup that should struggle with Detmers, who has cooled down a bit after a scorching hot start to the season. But Detmers has still pitched at least 6.0 innings in three of his seven starts this year. And he’ll have a golden opportunity to reach that mark this evening.

Pick: Detmers Over 17.5 Outs (-137)
