MLB Player Props for Tuesday, May 14

The 2024 MLB season is finally here. After another wild offseason and an exciting couple of weeks of Spring Training, we’re ready for some games that matter. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Tuesday, May 14th.

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins – 7:40 pm ET

Carlos Rodon’s swing-and-miss stuff just hasn’t been as dominant as expected since arriving in New York. After posting a 33.4% strikeout rate in 2022, Rodon has failed to even reach the 25.0% mark in his two seasons in the Bronx. But Rodon has shown some signs of life lately, striking out at least six batters in each of his last three starts. And I like the southpaw to hit that mark again in a meeting with the Twins. And I especially like the fact that you can get this at plus-money odds. This Minnesota team doesn’t strike out quite as much against lefties as it does righties, but it’s still a lineup full of players that can lack discipline at the plate. So, this feels like a play worth taking a shot on. Rodon also hasn’t seen the Twins in quite some time, so the team might not know how to attack him early in this game. So, perhaps the lefty will put a bunch of strikeouts on the board early, leaving little work to do the rest of the way.

Pick: Rodon Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+115)

Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers – 8:40 pm ET

I haven’t been shy about backing lefty sluggers against Pirates starter Quinn Priester. This season, lefties are batting .271 in 48 at-bats against Priester, and this is just a starter that has struggled throughout his young career when pitching to hitters on that side of the plate. Well, Priester now faces a Brewers team that has Christian Yelich up there to take advantage of the matchup. So, I’m backing the Brewers superstar to have a big game tonight. This season, Yelich is batting .350 with five homers and 13 RBIs for Milwaukee. And he’s batting .318 with a double, a triple, three homers and nine RBIs against right-handed pitching. He’s as well equipped as anyone to take advantage of Priester being on the hill. And while this play is a little juicy, it definitely seems worth it.

Pick: Yelich Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-145)

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres – 9:40 pm ET

Dylan Cease has been as good as advertised with the Padres this season. After being acquired by the Chicago White Sox to be San Diego’s new ace. Cease has started the year by going 5-2 with a 2.19 ERA in eight starts. Cease also has a career-high strikeout rate (32.4%) and has seen his hard hit percentage go from 41.5% in 2023 to 34.3% this season. Well, Cease now gets a crack at a Rockies team that has been absolutely miserable this season. Only two teams in the league have a lower wRC+ against right-handed pitching this year, and this game won’t be played in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. With that in mind, it’s just hard to see this being anything but a dominant outing from Cease, who threw 7.0 innings of one-run ball and struck out eight batters in a road start against this Colorado team on April 22nd. I expect similarly stellar stuff with this game being in San Diego. I’m playing Cease to record a win.

Pick: Cease To Record Win (-120)
