MLB Player Props for Wednesday, June 5

The 2024 MLB season is in full swing and we continue to come at it from a bunch of different directions. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Wednesday, June 5th.

Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies – 3:10 pm ET

Ryan McMahon is having an incredible season for the Rockies, as the 29-year-old is batting .280 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs. Oddly enough, McMahon has been doing a lot of his damage against left-handed pitching. That’s the main reason he has taken a huge leap for Colorado, as he has struggled against southpaws in the past. But McMahon has always done his best work against righties, and he’s facing a mediocre Graham Ashcraft at Coors Field today. So, in a game with the highest total on the board, I like McMahon’s chances of coming through with Over 1.5 hits, runs and RBIs. McMahon has been a little cold for the Rockies this week, but this seems like the perfect opportunity for him to snap out of it.

Pick: McMahon Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-160)

New York Mets at Washington Nationals – 4:05 pm ET

The Mets are seventh in the league in wRC+ against left-handed pitching this year, and only six teams in baseball have a lower strikeout rate against left-handed pitching. However, the Mets have seen a significant increase in strikeout rate since the start of May, so this isn’t a terrible matchup for Patrick Corbin. And the lefty’s strikeout total is down at 3.5 for this game, which is a very reasonable number for him. Corbin has had at least four strikeouts in each of his last two starts, and he has also had at least four strikeouts in six of his last 11 games. So, Corbin pretty regularly reaches this mark and I don’t think the matchup is as bad as it looks.

Pick: Corbin Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-110 – 1.5 units)

Milwaukee Brewers at Philadelphia Phillies – 4:05 pm ET

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I like Aaron Ashby to go into Philadelphia and shut the Phillies down. There’s a decent shot he gets beat up pretty good in this game. But Ashby is a player that can miss a decent number of bats. Two years ago, when the lefty was last a big part of the Brewers rotation, Ashby struck out 126 batters in 107.1 innings pitched. Of course, Ashby’s stuff has diminished over the years, and he struck out just about a batter per inning in the minors this year. But the Phillies haven’t seen the lefty since April 2022, so they won’t be all that familiar with his approach. And Philadelphia also happens to have the sixth-highest strikeout rate in the league against lefties since May 1st.

Pick: Ashby Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+110 – 1.5 units)
