Roll out the barrel
Growing up, I loved watching the All-Star Game because, of course, you saw players on the same field who were never on the same field except for the World Series.
I even attended the 1983 game at Comiskey Park with Fred Lynn hitting the only grand slam in the history of the midsummer classic.
Alas, I think we can agree that the Home Run Derby has overtaken the All-Star Game in popularity. That is especially true among bettors.
VSiN.com managing editor Adam Burke goes over the derby format and handicaps the eight-man field (8 ET, ESPN).
There are a few stats I like to look at for hitters and I’ll list those numbers for each participant. They are Barrel%, Pull%, FB%, HR/FB%, and Bat Speed. A “barrel” is a batted ball with the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to have at least an expected batting average of .500 and an expected slugging percentage of 1.500.
Mariners switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh, the home-run leader with 38, is the favorite at +340 at Circa.
>>Adam has two players for your consideration if you are so inclined.
Greg Peterson has another name for you.
