Giants vs. Mets Side Analysis

David Peterson has had a brutal year for the Mets, as he’s 2-6 with a 7.00 ERA in nine starts this season. But the lefty is coming off a game in which he threw 6.0 shutout innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, and he has been a lot better at home this season. Peterson is just 1-2 when pitching at Citi Field, but he has an ERA of just 3.24 in those three starts. With that in mind, it’s not crazy to think he’ll pitch well against this San Francisco team on Sunday.

The Giants are a middle-of-the-pack offensive team this season, so this isn’t exactly a matchup that should be daunting for Peterson. The lefty did struggle in a road start against the Giants this season, but you can almost throw a performance like that away. Peterson is a completely different pitcher when he’s doing his work in New York, and I’d actually be surprised if he doesn’t turn things around and give the Giants fits tonight.

On top of liking the Mets’ starter in this one, I also like New York’s chances of getting to Ross Stripling here. Stripling has a lousy 6.88 ERA in 35.1 innings pitched this season, and he got chased in the fourth inning in a meeting with this Mets team earlier in the year. New York is second in the league in wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season, so this is a team that can really do damage against righties, even if the Mets have been an up-and-down squad throughout the year.

Keep an eye on Tommy Pham in this game. He’s batting .291 with a triple, 10 doubles, two homers and 19 RBIs against righties this season. Pham could be a good source of offense in a game like this.

Giants vs. Mets Total Analysis

If I had to make a play on the total in this game, I’d go with the Over. Even though I expect Peterson to do a nice job for the Mets, I think that looks more like a quality start than complete dominance. He just hasn’t shown that side of himself much this season, and I don’t see him shutting down his opponent twice in a row. Meanwhile, New York should be able to beat up on Stripling in this game. It’s a golden matchup for a Mets team that crushes righties, as they’re hosting a struggling one in a game in which their players should be completely locked in.

The Over is also 23-10 when San Francisco is coming off a game in which it scored one or fewer runs over the last two seasons. So, this is a Giants team that generally tends to fix things up a bit.

These teams are also just due for an Over. San Francisco has gone six games without an Over hitting, and the Under is 4-0-2 in New York’s last six.

Giants vs. Mets Best Bet

My favorite play in this game is backing the home team. I think the Mets should be able to do a lot of damage against Stripling, and that’ll make life on Peterson rather easy. New York should get this one and win its first series in what feels like forever.

Pick: Mets ML (-130)
