Celtics ML (-108 – 1.5 units) vs. Knicks

Knicks at Celtics – 8:00 pm ET

The Knicks are probably the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. I mentioned that on the Monday episode of Hardwood Handicappers. However, New York shouldn’t just be expected to beat good teams on the road. Well, Boston is starting to look like a very good team, and it’s a team that happens to be a tough matchup for the Knicks.

This season, New York is allowing 15.0 made 3s per game. Only two teams in the NBA are giving up more than that. Well, Boston is shooting 43.0 triples per game this season, which is the third-highest mark in basketball. This Celtics team isn’t as trigger-happy from deep as previous ones, but Joe Mazzulla’s teams are always going to get up a ton of shots. So, with New York being a team that is prone to giving up good ones, there’s a chance Boston lights Mike Brown’s team up. I also think this is a game that Jaylen Brown will take over. OG Anunoby will miss this one for the the Knicks. That has nothing to do with Brown’s hair smearing all over Anunoby’s jersey last game. The New York wing simply hasn’t returned from his left hamstring sprain. But Anunoby is a big, physical defender. Without him, the Knicks won’t have a good answer for Brown’s ability to create offense.

New York is also just 3-5 with a net rating of -0.2 when playing away from home this year. Meanwhile, Boston is 6-4 with a net rating of +6.8 at TD Garden. On top of that, the Knicks beat the Celtics earlier in the season. That’s worth mentioning because the Celtics are 45-16 straight-up under Mazzulla when facing a team they lost to earlier in the season. I said it on the podcast, but great coaches make great adjustments. I think Boston will be ready to go here.

Grizzlies-Spurs Under 213.5 (-113)

Grizzlies at Spurs – 8:00 pm ET

Zach Edey returned to the Grizzlies eight games ago. Since then, the big man is averaging 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, and he has completely stabilized Memphis’ play on both ends of the floor. The Grizzlies are now 5-3 since the 23-year-old came back, but it’s the pace and defense that matter here. Over the last eight games, Memphis is 23rd in the NBA in pace of play (99.08) and fourth in defensive rating (109.6). That’s why I like the Under in tonight’s meeting with San Antonio.

While there will be reasons for De’Aaron Fox and the Spurs to push the pace in this game, San Antonio is just one spot above Memphis in pace (99.13) over the last eight games. That said, there’s no guarantee the Spurs will look to run, even if that would give them the opportunity to run some offense before Edey’s back and set.

The Under is also 14-7 in all Memphis games this season, plus it’s 6-4 in the 10 home games San Antonio has played. I’ll take my chances with this one, and you can get a better number on it than I did. I see some shops with 232.5 out there.
