NBA Best Bets Today – Monday, February 9
Pistons ML (-130 – 1.5 units) vs. Hornets
Pistons at Hornets – 7:00 pm ET
The Pistons can still be had at -130 if you search around, but I’d still play Detroit at the -138 odds you’ll find at one of the more prominent sportsbooks. This Hornets team has been fantastic lately, winning nine consecutive games and performing like the best offensive team in basketball. However, even in a 14-game stretch in which Charlotte has played like an elite team, Detroit actually has a higher net rating. Over the last 14 games, the Hornets are 11-3 with a +9.1 net rating, while the Pistons are 10-4 with a +10.6 net rating. That says that Detroit is capable of playing with a Charlotte team that is at its very best. However, looking at the full season-long picture shows a Pistons team that is much better than the Hornets. That said, Detroit has a much higher baseline and average performance. I’ll take that when looking at this price.
Charlotte simply can’t keep winning forever, and this looks like the spot the winning streak ends. Cade Cunningham will be the best player on the floor here, and Jalen Duren should be able to move Moussa Diabate around with his combination of size and force. Look for big things out of that two-man game tonight. Detroit also has the defense required to slow Charlotte down.
I just think we’re getting awesome odds on the better team here. However, I will note that this is the ultimate test for the Hornets. If they win this game, we’ll learn a lot about who they can be in the long run.
