Magic ML (-120) vs. 76ers
Magic at 76ers – 8:00 pm ET
These teams got off to different starts this season, with Orlando struggling and Philadelphia thriving. However, over the last 10 games, things have gone in another direction. In that span, the Magic are 7-3 with with a net rating of +6.8. Meanwhile, the 76ers are 4-6 with a net rating of -1.9.
Orlando is starting to figure some things out defensively. This team, which was top-five in the NBA in defensive rating in each of the previous two seasons, is just 15th in the NBA in defensive rating (113.7) right now. However, the Magic have looked a lot tougher on that end of the floor lately, with Sunday’s blowout loss to the Celtics on the second leg of a back-to-back being the main reason that number isn’t better. But overall, Orlando is looking tougher to score against, plus the team is playing much better offensively. In fact, the Magic are up to 10th in the NBA in offensive rating (116.8) this season, with the Desmond Bane acquisition doing everything this front office hoped it would.
Tonight, even with Paolo Banchero out for Orlando, the team really should be able to make some things happen against Philadelphia. The 76ers are just barely inside the NBA’s top-20 in defensive rating (115.2), and VJ Edgecombe and Kelly Oubre Jr. will both be out this evening. Those are two of Philadelphia’s most athletic — and engaged — defenders.
Of course, the Magic will have to slow down Tyrese Maxey, who is averaging 33.0 points and 7.8 assists per game this season. However, it does help having Jalen Suggs and Anthony Black to throw on him. They’ll at least make him work throughout the course of this 48-minute contest. That’s better than most teams can do.
Orlando is also 26-18 straight-up as a road favorite under Jamahl Mosley, and the team is also 10-4 SU when avenging a straight-up loss as a road favorite versus an opponent. Well, that second one matters here, as the Sixers won 136-124 as 6.5-point underdogs when these teams met in Philly on October 27. I’ll also add that Nick Nurse is just 9-31 SU as a home underdog with the Sixers, so history suggests he won’t pull another home upset out of his tush.
I just think Orlando is the better basketball team right now. I’m also not sure the potential return of Joel Embiid (questionable) will help Philadelphia — unless the big man miraculously looks like himself.
