Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Analysis
The Timberwolves got off to a slow start this season, but they’re coming on lately. Minnesota has won 10 of its last 12 games, with one of those being a playoff-style victory over Oklahoma City on December 19. The Timberwolves are figuring out how to win without playing a true table-setting guard, as Nickeil Alexander-Walker is now on the Hawks and Mike Conley is getting less and less reliable as he ages. Chris Finch’s solution has been relying even more on Anthony Edwards, who has been sensational on both ends of the floor recently.
The Timberwolves now head to Denver for a Christmas Day matchup with a wounded Nuggets team. Denver has largely been able to navigate its injuries this season, but the team found out Wednesday that Cameron Johnson will be joining Christian Braun and Aaron Gordon on the sidelines for a while.
Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray are great players, plus this front office did a good job of adding cheap depth over the summer. However, it feels unfair to expect Denver to continue to beat good Western Conference opponents without three massive parts of the rotation. That’s why the Nuggets have lost two of their last three games, with one of them coming against an average Mavericks squad.
The only thing keeping me from loading up on Minnesota in this game is the fact that the Timberwolves are just 17-26 straight-up when facing teams with winning percentages of 70% or higher under Finch. This has not been a trustworthy group when taking on the big boys, and I’m not sure if the win over the Thunder was a fluke or a sign of things to come.
The Nuggets also happen to be 11-6 SU and 10-6-1 against the spread when playing only six or fewer games in 14 days under David Adelman, so Denver has been good about taking advantage of extra rest and preparation. I’ll also add that the Nuggets don’t often get out-gunned. Under Adelman, they’re 14-7 both SU and ATS when facing teams that average at least 116.0 points per game.
I also have very little trust in Minnesota if this ends up being a crunch-time game. The Timberwolves have been good with five or fewer minutes this season, but they have also struggled in those situations in recent seasons. Well, if this ends up being a one-possession game late, Jokic becomes the most dangerous player on the court.
Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Player Props
Donte DiVincenzo Over 3.5 Assists (-102 – 1.5 units) & DiVincenzo Alt Assists 5+ (+178 – 0.5 units)
Over the last 12 games, DiVincenzo is averaging 7.3 potential assists and 5.8 adjusted assists per game. He’s being asked to carry a little more of the load as a playmaker these days, as Minnesota has largely ditched playing a traditional point guard. Well, DiVincenzo has answered the bell, and he comes into this one having had at least four assists in 10 of the last 12 contests. That makes it hard not to like the Italian to finish with at least four here. The Nuggets are 22nd in the NBA in raw defensive rating (117.5) over the last 10 games, which has a lot to do with them missing some key defenders. I see DiVincenzo taking advantage of that, which is why I’m also taking a shot on him to finish with five dimes.
Timberwolves vs. Nuggets Pick
Denver is extremely banged up right now, and Rudy Gobert has been a pretty good Jokic defender over the years. That’s why I lean Minnesota here. However, instead of taking a traditional side, I’m going to look to parlay the Wolves on an alternate line with something in the Rockets-Lakers game. So, keep an eye on the VSiN Picks Page for that. Still, I am taking the DiVincenzo props. I think he’s going to deliver as a dimer.
Bet: DiVincenzo Over 3.5 Assists (-102 – 1.5 units) & DiVincenzo Alt Assists 5+ (+178 – 0.5 units)
