Eagles vs. Chargers Analysis
The Eagles are going to have some strong representation in the crowd here, as the Chargers don’t have a great fanbase and Philly’s fans travel well. However, that’s not enough to give the Eagles the nod in this exciting Monday night showdown.
This is a game in which the VSiN betting splits tell a real story. Nearly 75% of the tickets and handle have been on Philadelphia here, but Los Angeles has gone from +2.5 to +1.5. That’s some noteworthy reverse line movement, meaning sharp bettors appear to like the Chargers. However, that’s not the only reason to like LA. The product we’ve seen on the field from both squads in recent weeks really favors the Chargers.
The Eagles come into this game after having lost two in a row, and the way they lost last week was very concerning. Chicago ran all over Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day, picking up 281 yards on the ground. Well, Los Angeles has battled injuries along the offensive line all season long, but offensive coordinator Greg Roman is going to try and pound the ball up the middle — especially with Justin Herbert having just had surgery on a broken bone in his left hand. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chargers have some success on early downs here. I also like Herbert to make some big plays in this game, even with the weird week of practice. He got in some reps after undergoing the procedure, and he’ll be going to work against a very beatable secondary.
It is, however, highly possible that Los Angeles won’t have to do too much offensively in this game. That’s because the Philadelphia offense has been miserable lately. Dating back to Week 10, the Eagles are just 21st in the NFL in EPA per play (-0.080). Meanwhile, the Chargers were tied for fifth in the NFL in EPA per play allowed (-0.052) heading into Week 14, and they have been a force on that side of the ball since they started to get healthy. Don’t be surprised if LA does a decent job of keeping Saquon Barkley in check. And if the Chargers do that, they should be in great shape here. Jalen Hurts hasn’t been sharp as a passer this season, and there’s no reason to believe that’ll change in this matchup.
This is also a Harbaugh type of game. The total here is 41.5. Well, since Harbaugh became the head coach of Los Angeles, the team is 5-1 straight-up when playing at home in games with totals between 35.5 and 42 points. Harbaugh is also 7-2 SU in Monday Night Football games throughout his coaching career.
Eagles vs. Chargers Player Props
Lean: Keenan Allen Over 3.5 Receptions (-114)
While Allen isn’t necessarily a threat to pop off for big yardage, he’s still a receiver that consistently creates separation and makes himself available to Herbert. And the quarterback trusts Allen to come up big in key situations. That’s why I’m willing to ignore a tough matchup and suggest a play on Allen to finish with at least four catches. Allen has actually had at least four receptions in 10 of the 12 games he has played this season, so this is something he does for Los Angeles regularly. Our WR-CB Matchup Tool also happens to like this matchup for Allen, and our OptaAI player prop projections have the veteran going for 4.43 receptions.
Eagles vs. Chargers Pick
I played Los Angeles on the moneyline on Monday, so I got a much better price than the one that’s currently available. However, I still believe the Chargers are the right side. Philadelphia might be the more talented team, but this is a flawed group. Meanwhile, LA is starting to play some really good football again.
Bet: Chargers ML (+135)
