Eagles vs. Commanders Analysis

This isn’t exactly the greatest Sunday Night Football matchup, but it’s football, and it’s on television. We’ll watch it, and we’ll bet it. It’s also pretty clear which way this one is being bet, as our betting splits pages will quickly show you that Washington has moved from -3.5 to -6. Between the Eagles’ blowout loss to the Cowboys on Sunday and the team’s Star Wars crawl-looking injury report, there’s a major lack of belief in the road team.

Washington also happens to be two tiers above Philadelphia in looking at rbsdm’s Net EPA/Play numbers, as the Commanders are 18th on offense (-0.008) and 25th on defense (0.067). Somehow, that profile is better than that of the Eagles, who are 29th on offense (-0.086) and 27th on defense (0.104).

This game could also be as simple as this: one team has Jayden Daniels, a starting NFL quarterback, under center, and the other has Tanner McKee, a proven backup-quality performer. Washington has upside; Philadelphia doesn’t.

Under Nick Sirianni, the Eagles also happen to be just 2-3 straight-up and 1-4 against the spread when playing on the road in games with totals of 35.5 to 42 points. Also, Philadelphia is 2-6 SU and 1-7 ATS when coming off a loss by at least 14 points under Sirianni, which shows you that a there’s a real theme of the wheels falling off with this iteration of the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Dan Quinn might have a million faults as a head coach, but he’s 7-2-1 SU and 7-3 ATS as a home favorite of 7 or fewer since arriving in Washington. The Commanders are also 4-1 both SU and ATS when looking for same-season revenge against an opponent under Quinn.

There’s a lot that suggests we could see a pretty convincing Washington win. The Over could also be an interesting play. Considering the way Philadelphia has looked defensively recently, it’s a little hard to imagine the Eagles slowing down a Daniels-led offense. However, if you have any faith in McKee, you should also be expecting to see some points from Philadelphia. After all, Washington’s passing defense absolutely stinks, and the Eagles did put up 21 last game.

Eagles vs. Commanders Player Props

Stefon Diggs Over 4.5 Receptions (+132) & Alt Receptions 6+ (+295 – 0.5 units) & Alt Receptions 7+ (+600 – 0.1 unit)

If you’re looking for props, our OptaAI player prop pages have hundreds of projections on a weekly basis. I strongly suggest checking them out. However, for this week, I did my own deep dive and decided to play a Diggs receiving ladder. Diggs has had at least five catches in three of the last six games, and he’s averaging 7.6 targets per game. Now he gets to go up against an outrageously soft secondary, and there’s a good chance he consistently creates separation. It’ll just be up to Daniels to put it on him, and it’s not like he hasn’t been trying.

Eagles vs. Commanders Pick

I have leans on Washington and the Over, but the only plays I’m actually making here will be the Diggs props. In what could be a high-scoring game, I like Diggs to be a serious weapon for Daniels. Diggs had only four catches against Philadelphia on September 13, but he was also targeted nine times and easily could have finished with more receptions. Also, that Eagles team had more fight in it than the one we’ll see Sunday night.

Bet: Diggs Over 4.5 Receptions (+132), Alt Receptions 6+ (+295 – 0.5 units), Alt Receptions 7+ (+600 – 0.1 units)
