Purdy became first QB to beat Tom Brady in first NFL start

Last week, we were talking about Brock Purdy as the first Mr. Irrelevant to throw a touchdown pass in an NFL game. This week, we are talking about Purdy as the best quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers roster and a viable long-term solution to their QB questions.

Is it too soon? Is Mr. Irrelevant the real deal? Mitch Moss and Pauly Howard discussed on the Monday morning edition of Follow The Money.

Super Bowl LVII Odds

The betting markets still haven’t fully bought in with Purdy and the 49ers, as San Francisco is +900 to win Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles (+450) and Cowboys (+800) still have shorter odds among NFC teams and the Bills (+350 favorite) and Chiefs (+500) have shorter odds among AFC teams. There is a chance that Jimmy Garoppolo could return, but the way Purdy is playing brings into question whether or not head coach Kyle Shanahan would make the switch.

On The Greg Peterson Experience, host Greg Peterson was joined by betting analysts Albert Nguyen and Meghan Payton for Week 14 recap, including thoughts on Purdy, and a preview of Monday Night Football between the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals.

An interesting stat as the Patriots take the field tonight. New England never lost to a QB making his first start with Tom Brady at the helm. Brady made some dubious personal history with the Buccaneers yesterday in the lopsided loss.

Brock Purdy injury

One of the under-the-radar stories from Sunday is that Purdy was injured in the win over the Buccaneers and went for additional testing on an oblique concern that popped up. Purdy did take a few big shots to the midsection and was benched with about eight minutes left in the game, but Shanahan downplayed the injury, noting that wasn’t the reason he sat down the former Iowa State product.

It was a blowout at that point and the 49ers are on their third-string QB already after Trey Lance was hurt in Week 1 and Garoppolo suffered the foot injury two weeks ago.

Deebo Samuel injury

Of greater concern for the 49ers is that Samuel suffered an ankle injury that may take up the rest of the regular season, if not more. MRI results are pending, but the belief is that he may have a high ankle sprain. Samuel has had a big of a down year with 612 receiving yards and 228 rushing yards while accounting for five touchdowns, but he is a big threat on every play and the 49ers can ill afford to lose skill guys with a rookie QB at the helm.
