Myles Garrett:
Normally the Browns aren’t talked about at all during Super Bowl week, given that they haven’t won one or played in one. But, when a team’s star player requests a trade, and he’s arguably the best at his position, it will dominate some headlines. That is precisely the case with the Browns and Myles Garrett. The four-time All-Pro and 2023 Defensive Player of the Year wants out of Cleveland. He even went down to the Super Bowl in New Orleans to talk about his trade request and position on where things stand with the team.
To this point, Browns GM Andrew Berry has said he’s not interested in trading Garrett, who has 102.5 sacks and 116 tackles for loss over his eight seasons with Cleveland. The Browns have needs and some salary cap issues, so they have to at least entertain the possibility and it would be a surprise if any of the other 31 teams opted not to put in a call to Cleveland’s front office.

The Browns don’t have to trade Garrett. He’s unhappy, but he’s not going to sit out. Teams will typically try to accommodate a player’s request or offer a contract extension or restructuring to diffuse the situation. Spotrac projects Garrett for a four-year, $137M deal with his next contract. It would cost Cleveland some dead cap money to trade him due to a previous restructure.
If the Browns traded him before June 1, they’d eat $36.2M in dead cap per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. If they traded him after June 1, which is the date that the new league year begins, it would be $14.6M in 2025 and then another $21M spread over the next three years. In other words, the Browns are the rightful favorites at +300 to still have him on the roster. Also, keep in mind that the NFL Draft is April 24-26, well before the June 1 date for Garrett’s cost against the Browns’ cap to be less penal for 2025.
The Browns would have to be blown away by a trade offer to consider trading Garrett and there aren’t a whole lot of teams that can blow them away and have the cap space for adding Garrett’s impending extension.
Every team could use a player like Garrett, but not every team has a fair shot. For the sake of argument, let’s look at some teams that could swing a deal.
Arizona Cardinals (+850): I think this is the bet I’d make if I was picking against the Browns just keeping Garrett. The Cardinals have a ton of cap space. And while they don’t have a top-10 pick like the other teams on my list, the Cardinals have 16 and 47 available. Plus, if they feel like Garrett is a game-changer in a suddenly wide-open NFC West, they might be willing to part with next year’s first-round pick as well.
Jonathan Gannon’s defense in Philly set a record with 70 sacks two years ago. You know a guy like that understands the value of a pass rush. Garrett would be a great role model for Darius Robinson and probably embrace a trade to the desert, as the Phoenix area is not a bad place to be in the winter.
For Cleveland’s sake, Arizona is in the NFC and they wouldn’t see Garrett often, plus they could maybe find a way to get some extra salary moved around in a trade given that Arizona has some room.
Chicago Bears (+1200): The Bears have a top-10 pick. They also have plenty of incentive to go for it with Caleb Williams and a new coaching staff. Ben Johnson certainly knows the value of an elite pass rusher with Aidan Hutchinson in Detroit. The Bears have cap space and a lot of high-value picks for this April.
This was a defense that already generated a good amount of pressure, but they’re in a division with Jordan Love, Jared Goff, and J.J. McCarthy, so getting after the QB will remain a very important trait for the foreseeable future. It is also the right type of impact move to make as the organization starts a new era.
New England Patriots (+850): The Patriots need impact players on both sides of the ball and there may not be a more impactful defensive player than Garrett. The Patriots have the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, which might be enough of a centerpiece for Cleveland to eat the dead cap for this season. Two top-five picks would be a great start towards a rebuild.
The Patriots had the fewest sacks in the league with 28. If they do feel like Drake Maye is the future on offense, a player like Garrett raises the defensive ceiling enough to be a playoff contender in short order.
Cleveland may also be interested in 2026 draft picks for when their financial situation might be a little clearer and the Patriots, even with Garrett, should draft in the top half of the first round. Mike Vrabel was around Garrett all of last season. Garrett wants to go to a contender, and a team like the Patriots would want to know if an extension was possible before acquiring such a player, so that’s the rub here.
Ultimately, my guess is that the Browns keep Garrett, make him the highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL, and have an additional financial quandary to spend all summer figuring out.
