Schein 9 NFL Week 7:
The 49ers covered. So did the Bears. Always good to be 2-0 before the main Sunday action. In fact, on Friday’s Make it Rain with Adam Schein on VSiN we divided our picks as usual into two categories of what we love (and bet) and what we like, picking every game against the spread.
San Fran, Chicago, Houston, Cincy, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Tampa all made me look great.

My Cowboys pick, however…
I also started Dak Prescott in DFS.
And my son Theo turned a buck into 5. He really thinks this is the norm. In his fourth-grade writing journal, he wrote about how when Tyler Bass lines up for a kick in makes him scared. He also added that he is happy when weekly prices for DFS come out Tuesdays on DraftKings.
Great moment in parenthood.
Here are our midweek musings, plays, predictions, Schein 9 style:
1. Adams’ Apple
Welcome to the Big Apple, Davante Adams. This was always the move, always the quarterback, always the team, always the trade. We said Adams to the Jets in July when Aaron Rodgers was talking about playing with his guy again while playing golf in Lake Tahoe. And Adams was openly daydreaming about it. And when the trade request was made, this was the conclusion.
The Jets have lost three straight games by 10 points. I couldn’t believe they gave away the game following the week they fired the coach and demoted the offensive coordinator, both the right moves. This season has a Same Old Jets kind of feel. Greg Zuerlein missed two easy kicks that killed the Jets on Monday. He missed the game winner against Denver.
But the Jets offense did a lot of good things against Buffalo. Adams and Rodgers have a special relationship and connection. It is one of the best QB / WR combinations in the NFL in the last 30 years. The stats and feel back that up. In fact, Rodgers and Adams have the third-most regular season touchdowns for a QB / WR pair in NFL history. There’s no learning curve. Adams knows the offense and the quarterback and this will only make Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall that much better.
The 2-4 Jets were favored by a point IN Pittsburgh against the 4-2 Steelers by a point BEFORE the trade. I can’t stress enough how much I love the Jets on Sunday night.
In a related story…
2. No, Chef
Forget “let Russ cook”. Russ is cooked. Mike Tomlin turning to Russell Wilson is amateur hour and inexplicable. First-team reps. Creating chaos. And this is after a monster bounce back win against the Raiders. I don’t like the drama. I don’t like Wilson’s presence. Wilson had his worst yards per attempt of his career last year. And unlike Fields, he isn’t a threat to take off and make plays. I don’t like the matchup.
The Jets are 0-7 ATS in their last seven road primetime games. And I love New York. That’s how much I think Wilson is a grenade into the Steelers aura.
Check Pittsburgh’s remaining schedule. I still don’t believe in this team making the playoffs.
3. Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper
“Big Baller” Brandon Beane lived up to the nickname on Tuesday with a monster trade, pilfering Amari Cooper from the lowly Browns. Even with the Bills stopping their two-game losing streak – and it was needed – the victory didn’t inspire. This trade does. Cooper is still a legit WR1 who is the perfect, long-time-coming replacement for Stefon Diggs.
The number is large on Sunday at home with Buffalo favored by 8.5. But the Will Levis led Titans are 1-6 both straight up and ATS in their last seven. Bills are due to dominate.
4. Brown Out
As in the Browns are really out after trading Amari Cooper. I never took the cheese on Cleveland this year. I bet they would miss the playoffs and loved the preseason Under. It will all hit. And Browns fans must feel like they’ve been hit with a ton of bricks after making the playoffs last year. With Deshaun Watson back under center, and Joe Flacco chased away because his presence reminded everyone just how bad Watson is, Cleveland was dead on arrival. Following the Cooper deal, the line in the Bengals at Cleveland game jumped from 4.5 to 6.5. Watson hasn’t thrown for over 200 yards in a game this year. Browns are the only team in the league not to score 20 points in a game this season. I feel bad for Kevin Stefanski, a great coach forced to stick with Watson. The quarterback has drained the life out of the team, fan base, and they’ve officially (and correctly) waved the white flag. What a waste. What an opportunity for the Bengals to explode. Bengals are 14-5 in their last 19 ATS against Cleveland.
5. Love Hurts
Jordan Love deserves so much credit for a monster win against Arizona. I was dead wrong on that game. But I think this is a much tougher task for the Packers, even at home. The Texans are being undervalued at 5-1. They are playing terrific team ball. Sure, the Nico Collins injury hurts for this week, but the return of Joe Mixon adds great balance to Bobby Slowik’s offense. Houston was excellent last year playing as a dog. And it took a while for Vegas and the league to realize they were legit. Texans are 5-1 against the spread in their last 6 games started by the great CJ Stroud as an underdog. He takes everything personally. So does DeMeco Ryans. This is a game at historic Lambeau Field with the CBS “A-team” of Jim Nantz, Tony Romo, Tracy Wolfson on the call. For the Texans, always rightly deserving of more respect, this matters. I like the Texans ML with Stroud, Tank Dell, and Stefon Diggs leading the way
6. Hutch Effect
Aidan Hutchinson had surgery this week after his gruesome leg injury. My heart bleeds for him and the Lions and the great Detroit fans. Detroit looked like a well-rounded, elite juggernaut in pasting the Cowboys in Dallas. But the Hutch injury most certainly curbs the enthusiasm and big-picture expectations. Detroit is loaded on offense in every way. The defense isn’t great. Hutch was clearly the best player on the defense and a true Defensive Player of the Year candidate. The Lions are still favored to win the ultra-competitive NFC North. The Vikings have been the better and more complete team. Brian Flores’ defense has stoned the likes of the Texans, Niners, and flummoxed Aaron Rodgers. The Lions offense seems unstoppable. Flores, my assistant coach of the year favorite, will be the kryptonite.
7. Feeling Super
Color me obsessed with the Niners and Chiefs Super Bowl rematch in San Francisco this weekend. Sometimes revenge is an overrated term for game day. Not on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid beat Kyle Shanahan twice in the big game in the last five years. And with Shanahan still searching for the elusive Lombardi trophy, trust me this is personal. It’s also professional. It’s the only knock to the Shanahan / John Lynch run in the Bay Area. They’ve assembled a juggernaut. They need a trophy to back it up. And losing in overtime to the Chiefs last year was a major blow. It was another blown lead in a big game for Shanahan. I think he’s a superb coach, but this needs to stop happening.
KC is 5-0. San Fran is 3-3. And the Niners are rightly favored. Sure, San Fran has had a couple of inexplicable and gruesome chokes up double digits against inferior / banged up teams. But the talent, game location, defense, available weapons in the passing attack, aforementioned revenge matters.
And can we give Brock Purdy his flowers? Purdy has been sensational this year. He was plagued by drops in the losses to the Cardinals and Rams.
How about these betting nuggets. Patrick Mahomes (32) and Brock Purdy (27) enter Week 7 with the two longest active starting QB streaks without being underdog in the regular season. The Chiefs are currently an underdog. Including playoffs, Patrick Mahomes ranks 1st among 320 QBs with 10+ starts as an underdog in SU record (10-3), ATS record (11-1-1), team PPG (32.5), Pass YPG (301.7) and passer rating (112.3).
And yes, it’s Andy Reid off the bye, which feels automatic for a Reid team in both Kansas City and Philadelphia.
But I think Sunday is Purdy’s time to shine. Did you know that the win over Seattle was Purdy’s eighth career game with three or more passing TDs and zero INT (most in NFL since 2022)? And Purdy is second in passing yards and yards per attempt?
Vegas is smart to favor the Niners. And you will be smart to take them. This game means more to the Niners in every way. Kyle Shanahan’s gets revenge with a four-point win.
8. Oh Henry!
If only the Orioles had a closer like Derrick Henry, they might still be playing. Henry was sensational and unstoppable against the Commanders, churning out his 20th career game with 100 rush yards and two rushing touchdowns, fourth-most all-time. He’s a Hall of Famer. This was always the case in Tennessee, but now teamed with Lamar Jackson, Henry is getting his due. They are on pace for 3,136 rushing yards, which would shatter the record for any duo on the same team. Jackson is special. They both have MVP vibes. Baker Mayfield is oddly 1-5 on Monday Night Football. That was a great win in New Orleans last week but this is a different team and vibe. I love Baltimore laying the 3.5.
9. Bear-It
It’s perfect that the Bears have a bye week following Caleb Williams four-touchdown explosion in London. And it was perfect that we absorbed so much football in the aftermath of the Bears rocking the Jags. It lets the Bears fly under the radar. Rough week for the haters, critics, Twitter tough guys, media elite jumping off the bandwagon. Don’t hurt yourself hopping back on. Everything we said that Williams and the Bears would achieve preseason is on track. After the bye, Chicago has Washington in the battle of the top two picks in the draft. The NFL moved Commanders and Bears into the CBS 4:25 slot to get more eyes on the game. I love that for the league – and Caleb.
