Super Bowl 60 MVP Odds and Past Super Bowl MVP Winners

Cooper Kupp was the MVP of Super Bowl LVI and we’ve had three straight quarterbacks since. Patrick Mahomes won two of them himself, but failed in his quest for a third straight when Jalen Hurts and the Eagles pummeled the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX last year. Over the years, this has proven to be an award heavily slanted towards the QB position, which is hardly a surprise. But, it should give bettors looking for long shots some pause, as it takes a lot of things really falling into place for a big price to win it.

This season, we have Drake Maye of the Patriots and Sam Darnold of the Seahawks, neither of whom have the list of accomplishments or the name value of recent Super Bowl quarterback MVPs like Hurts, Mahomes, or Tom Brady, but the QBs are still the favorites and the history of this award is a major reason why.

Darnold is the rightful favorite at +125 and is a better number than what you can get on the Seahawks moneyline. Similarly, Maye is +235 as the second favorite and that’s a bigger number than the moneyline on the underdog Patriots. These odds will be in a constant state of motion up until the Super Bowl, but Darnold and Maye should stay the favorites throughout.

Before we go any further, let’s discuss that part of the equation.

Super Bowl MVP Winners by Position

  • QB: 34
  • RB: 7
  • WR: 8
  • Defense: 10
  • KR/PR: 1

Super Bowl XII had co-MVPs with Harvey Martin and Randy White, both defensive players.

Note that a tight end has never won the Super Bowl MVP.

Since 1998, which is the last time a running back won Super Bowl MVP (Terrell Davis, SB XXXII), here are the winners by position:

  • QB: 18
  • WR: 5
  • LB: 3
  • DB: 1

Sixteen of the last 25 Super Bowls have had a quarterback win the MVP award. We haven’t had a defensive player since Von Miller in Super Bowl 50, so it has either been a wide receiver (2) or quarterback (7) in each of the last nine Super Bowls.

Multiple Super Bowl MVP Winners

There are only six multiple Super Bowl MVP winners and all of them are quarterbacks, including Mahomes.

  • Tom Brady (36, 38, 49, 51, 55)
  • Joe Montana (16, 19, 24)
  • Patrick Mahomes (54, 57, 58)
  • Bart Starr (1, 2)
  • Terry Bradshaw (13, 14)
  • Eli Manning (42, 46)

Note that Starr, Bradshaw, and Mahomes are the only back-to-back winners. Brady won back-to-back Super Bowls in 38 and 39, but Deion Branch won the Super Bowl 39 MVP without scoring a touchdown (11 rec., 133 yards). Mahomes won his second straight in Super Bowl 58.
