Alexander Ovechkin Goals Record Chase Odds:
“He can see the mountain top from here. We are at DEFCON 5.” That was the call from Washington Capitals broadcaster, Joe Beninati when Alexander Ovechkin scored career goal 890 on Sunday versus Buffalo. Ovechkin is now just five goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record of 894. Ovi and the Caps have nine games left in the regular season to set the record. Otherwise, he will have to wait for the 2025-26 season to pass the “Great One.”
The latest odds at FanDuel are the Yes (to break the record) at (-170) and the NO (+130). Since the return from the 4 Nations tournament, Ovechkin has had only one instance of scoring goals in back-to-back games, and his hat trick on February 23 versus Edmonton was the only game in which he has scored two goals or more. If he stays at his current goal pace, then he will fall one goal short of breaking the record this season.
This week, Ovechkin and the Capitals face the Bruins (25th-ranked defense), Hurricanes (8th-ranked defense), Blackhawks (31st-ranked defense), and Islanders (19th-ranked defense). Ovi has 29 goals in 66 career games against the Bruins, 47 goals in 86 games against the Canes, 15 goals in 23 games against the Blackhawks, and 44 goals in 71 games against the Islanders.
At some point, Ovechkin is going to need either a multi-goal game and/or goals in consecutive games if he doesn’t want to have to wait until October of 2025 to break the record.
