News and Notes
- Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason did not have an update on Kirill Kaprizov after the forward left Thursday’s game against the Jets nine minutes into the third period. Kaprizov was able to skate off on his own, but he did not return. Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that the 25-year-old will have a full evaluation on Thursday.
- Filip Forsberg will remain out on Thursday. The 28-year-old hasn’t played since Feb. 11th and according to Predators’ head coach John Hynes, who appeared on 102.5 The Game in Nashville this morning, the star forward has had a bit of a setback.
- Pyotr Kochetkov was recalled from the American Hockey League, and he is expected to make his start with the Hurricanes since Jan. 15th due to being the odd goaltender out when Frederik Andersen returned to the lineup.
Best Bets Today
New Jersey Devils (60 Min Line) +105
Washington was (low key) one of the better defensive teams in the NHL coming into the season but that certainly hasn’t been the case as of late. Five out of the Capital’s top six defenseman from opening night are either injured or no longer with the team and it’s really started to show. The Capitals only allowed 25-plus shots on goal at five-on-five in 14 of their first 42 games.
Since then, the Capitals have allowed 25-plus shots at five-on-five in 14 of their last 23 games and only one team (St. Louis) has allowed more goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five. New Jersey, on the other hand, is one of the best five-on-five teams in the league. The Devils have the third-best expected goals percentage (58.3) over the last month.
Only six teams have taken more penalties per game since the start of February than the Capitals, and the Devils should keep them on their toes on Thursday by driving play and pushing the pace of the game. Washington has the third-worst expected goals percentage (42.6) over the last month, almost entirely due to their defensive deficiencies. The Capital rank dead last in expected goals against since the start of February.
New Jersey is the best road team in the NHL (23-4-4) this season, and the Capitals have only won four out of their last 10 games at home dating back to the end of December. The Devils should win this game about 63 percent of the time, according to my model, but the regulation line offers more value at +105 than the moneyline does at -145 so I bet on the Devils to get the job done in 60 minutes.
