On Sunday, ABC airs El Clásico for the first time, and with Mourinho back at the helm, this edition has the potential to be among the most explosive in recent memory.

Barcelona have owned Spanish football in recent years, with two La Liga titles, two Super Cups and a Copa del Rey under Hansi Flick. With the gap between the two clubs widening, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez turned again to the man he trusted to topple Barcelona at their strongest. In his first spell at the Bernabéu, José Mourinho ended Pep Guardiola’s run of three straight titles with a record 100-point season in 2011-12.

Now he’s back, tasked with the same job. Seven wins from nine is a solid start, but defeats at Real Betis and in the derby at Atlético already leave Madrid six points behind a Barcelona side that have won all nine. Lose Sunday and the gap is nine before Halloween.

Barcelona arrive with problems in defense and on the back of a 4-2 defeat at PSG, their first of the season. They look beatable, and Mourinho has wasted no time starting the mind games. Moments after Wednesday’s Champions League win over Leipzig, he was complaining that Madrid had lost 24 hours of rest on Barcelona, who played on Tuesday. Excuse in advance or opening salvo? With Mourinho, it’s usually both.

“The Special One” also looked back on the Guardiola years, when the two managers, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi turned this fixture into a global event, and said the world stopped for those games. On Sunday, American network television stops for it too.

BARCELONA TEAM NEWS

Barcelona’s defense is the big worry, with Eric García and Andreas Christensen both ruled out. Gerard Martín went off at halftime last weekend but played the full 90 minutes in Paris. He’ll partner Pau Cubarsí at center-back and both will be tasked with stopping the free-scoring Kylian Mbappé.

Right back is up in the air too. Jules Koundé is nursing an ankle sprain, and the club has said his progress over the coming days will decide whether he faces Madrid. If he doesn’t make it, 19-year-old Xavi Espart steps in, with Yan Diomande’s pace waiting for him.

Dani Olmo became the latest casualty in Paris, picking up a left adductor problem that is expected to sideline him for around a month. Fermín López—five goals and four assists this season—replaced him in the 27th minute and should take his place in the starting lineup.

Further forward, the spine of the team remains intact. Against PSG, Raphinha made his first start since Sept. 19 after being sidelined by a hamstring injury. Flick took him and Pedri off around the hour mark, while Rodri started on the bench and came on at the same point. All three decisions looked to be made with Sunday in mind.

Then there’s Lamine Yamal. After winning La Liga and the World Cup, the 19-year-old heads into Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony as joint favorite with Harry Kane. The votes are already in, but he’s playing like he wants to settle the argument anyway, with 10 goals and 10 assists this season across all competitions. With Mbappé also on the shortlist, Camp Nou hosts two Ballon d’Or rivals exactly 24 hours before the winner is named.

REAL MADRID TEAM NEWS

The headline absence is Vinícius Júnior, who is serving a four-match domestic ban for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair against Villarreal. VAR caught it in the buildup to what he thought was a goal, and his protests after the red card helped stretch the ban. Ferland Mendy, Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo are also out with long-term injuries.

Madrid will miss his pace in transition, but losing Vinícius actually makes life easier for Mourinho. Since Mbappé arrived in 2024, Madrid have never quite answered whether the two can coexist, with Mbappé drifting into the left channel Vinícius calls home. The problem looked to be going away in the summer, with Vinícius heavily linked to Arsenal. Instead, he signed a lucrative six-year extension through 2032, but the form hasn’t followed the money. One goal and three assists in 801 minutes across 11 appearances is a poor return for someone on a reported €600,000 per week.

It also lets Mourinho pick Yan Diomande without the media storm that benching Vinícius for a Clásico would cause. The club’s record €140 million signing has produced three goals and four assists in 569 minutes across 12 appearances, a goal involvement every 81 minutes. Speaking on the Trans Europe Express podcast, Kevin Hatchard said Diomande was regarded at RB Leipzig as an impressively quick learner, which may explain how smoothly he’s adapted to life at the Bernabéu. We will see him line up on the left.

At right back, Mourinho’s conversion of Federico Valverde is in full swing. The Uruguayan has started every game this season, and after Wednesday’s win, Mourinho said the right flank had worked excellently again. Expect Arda Güler to keep his place on the right side of the attack.

The next big question is who partners Aurélien Tchouaméni in central midfield: Eduardo Camavinga or Bernardo Silva. I’d go with Bernardo, and he looks to have earned it. Against Leipzig, he made his first start in a long time, scored his first goal for the club and was praised by Mourinho afterward for deserving his chance on merit.

Up top, Kylian Mbappé leads the line, with Jude Bellingham playing behind him as the No. 10 in Mourinho’s favored 4-2-3-1. The role has given Bellingham more freedom, and the output has followed: three goals and three assists, two of them for Mbappé. The French captain is the one Madrid player who can win this game on his own, with 12 goals and three assists in 12 appearances across all competitions. Together, they give Madrid the firepower to punish any Barcelona slip.

BARCELONA VS. REAL MADRID MATCH BETTING ANALYSIS

Hansi Flick has built this Barcelona side to play one way, and he won’t change it for Sunday. They hold an extremely high defensive line, squeezing the pitch and relying on a perfectly synchronized back four to spring the offside trap, with no margin for error and limited cover on the bench. When they lose the ball, they swarm the man in possession immediately to win it back high up the pitch or force a hurried clearance. It suffocates most opponents, but it leaves space in behind for any side that can beat the first wave of pressure with a direct ball over the top. That’s a dangerous gamble against Mbappé and Diomande’s pace and Bellingham’s runs from deep.

What makes Barcelona’s press so impressive is how hard they work despite dominating possession. They average 70.1% possession, the highest in La Liga, yet they rank fifth in distance covered at 104.4 kilometers per game. Possession sides usually run less. Barcelona run more. Madrid sit fifth in possession at 53.1%, but they’re 20th in distance covered at 97 kilometers, the lowest in the league.

PSG showed in their 4-2 win on Tuesday what it takes to beat Barcelona. Flick’s side covered 126.3 kilometers and made 174 sprints, and PSG kept pace at 122.9 kilometers and 154 sprints. They matched the tempo, sustained the pressure and outlasted Barcelona when the game opened up in the final 10 minutes. There’s no chance Madrid come close to those numbers. They average 102.8 sprints a game in La Liga to Barcelona’s 136.1.

That gap in work rate is why Bernardo Silva gets the nod. Madrid can’t outrun Barcelona, so when they win the ball, the first pass has to be right. Against Pedri and Rodri, Mourinho needs a technician who can receive in tight spaces, escape the press and find the runners. Camavinga brings energy and ball-carrying, but Madrid know they won’t win this midfield battle by running.

Expect Mourinho to revert to type. He’ll send his team out to sit deep, stay compact, close down the gaps and look to punish Barcelona on the counter. One clean pass through the press and Mbappé or Diomande will have space to exploit behind Barcelona’s high line.

It’s not an approach Madrid fans will appreciate, but patience is needed. Mourinho is only 12 games into his second spell, and history says this project takes time. His first Clásico in charge in November 2010 ended in a 5-0 defeat at Camp Nou, and Barcelona went on to win the league that season. It took until his second season, and that record 100-point campaign, for Madrid to finally topple Guardiola’s side.

Sunday is a measuring stick, and I expect it to show just how far Madrid still have to go.

BARCELONA VS. REAL MADRID BETTING PICKS

Everything in this preview points to a Barcelona win, but not a clean sheet. They conceded four in Paris on Tuesday, and Madrid have the quality to play through the press and get Mbappé or Diomande running at goal.

What Madrid don’t have is the work rate to keep up with Barcelona for 90 minutes. They rank last in La Liga in distance covered, and sitting deep against a side averaging 70.1% possession means long spells without the ball. Eventually Yamal, Raphinha and Fermín will find a way through. Barcelona to win at -155 is fair, but pairing it with Both Teams To Score Yes pushes the price to plus-money and covers the most likely script: Barcelona win, and Madrid land a punch on the counter.

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid Betting Pick – Same Game Parlay: Barcelona Moneyline (-155) and Both Teams To Score Yes (-370) = +106

This one’s a gut play, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. Mbappé is the obvious pick, but at nearly 3-1, Diomande is the price I can’t ignore. He has the pace to punish Barcelona’s high line and has scored in three of his last four games. There’s a reason Madrid paid €140 million for him, and there’s no bigger stage than El Clásico for him to fully announce himself. Back him to do it.
