One of the biggest games in English football completes the third round of fixtures and signs the Premier League off for two weeks as we go into the first international break. Manchester United faces Liverpool, and for the first time in close to a decade, it won’t be Jürgen Klopp in the visiting dugout. It will be Arne Slot.
It is very early to have an opinion on the result. Just two games into the new campaign, United have won one and lost one, while Slot has started his tenure on Merseyside with back-to-back 2-0 wins.
The new manager has said he is encouraged with the start, and why wouldn’t he be, but there is still a lot to prove in the season ahead. After all those games were against a promoted Ipswich and a Brentford side, you’d expect them to beat with Slot admitting neither will be in the top-six come May.
As for Manchester United, they have shown their defensive frailties once more, but Matthijs de Ligt may start, which will help, as will Manuel Ugarte if they can get his transfer from PSG completed in time. There are still more questions than answers when it comes to Erik ten Hag’s starting eleven and tactics.
This leads me to play the safe option, the one constant when these two sides meet: Mo Salah.
The Egyptian has dominated this fixture since scoring his first goal for Liverpool against the Red Devils in 2020. In total, he has now scored 14 goals in 15 appearances. That includes a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Old Trafford in 2021. All of which makes him the highest-scoring player in the history of this fixture.
With the constant rotation of his defense, ten Hag often causes confusion. We saw that last weekend with Brighton capitalizing on the wide-open spaces in United’s left back position to score the winning goal. That is where Salah patrols, and he will pounce on the slightest chance, which I feel he is sure to get and improve his incredible record further still.
EPL Prediction: Manchester United vs Liverpool – Mo Salah to score at +118.
