Barcelona, Munich and Stuttgart tennis best bets for April 15th

Between the ATP and WTA Tours, we have some massive 500-level events to watch this week. I’m going to continue churning out tennis best bets from Sunday to Thursday (my plays for most semifinals and finals will be on the picks page, though I will make exceptions for massive weekend matchups), so make sure you’re checking the website for coverage on 500-level events — like Barcelona, Munich and Stuttgart. Also, make sure you’re checking out the picks page for all of my action for smaller tournaments and Challengers.

We’re entering the most exciting portion of the tennis calendar, as there are several 1000-level events in the coming weeks. Those then flow into the majors, so everything heats up pretty quickly. We’ll be covering all of them, whether that’s with my columns or Gill Alexander’s excellent work on A Numbers Game. That said, if you like tennis, now is the time to consider a VSiN Pro subscription! It’s only $59 to get access to everything until August 1st!

With all of that in mind, check out my Barcelona, Munich and Stuttgart best bets for Tuesday, April 15th.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs. Alex de Minaur – Barcelona

De Minaur looked great in Monte-Carlo last week. I actually had him to win Quarter 2 at that 1000-level event, as I’m a big believer in the way his game translates to clay. However, it’s always difficult to go from a deep run at one event to an opening-round match at another. So, I can see the Australian struggling to find his footing early in Barcelona. And he might not have a lot of time to get himself going, as he’s facing a good clay-court player in his first match.

Etcheverry is off to an odd start to the 2025 season, but he’s still a dangerous opponent on this surface. Over the last 52 weeks, Etcheverry is 15-12 on the dirt. He just has a big game from the baseline, he moves pretty well and he understands how to make things happen on high-bouncing surfaces. On top of that, Etcheverry has added some pop as a server.

Of course, many will notice that de Minaur beat Etcheverry 6-1, 6-4 in United Cup action in December. But that was a match that was played in Australia, so de Minaur had a massive home-court advantage. He won’t have that when they take the court in Spain, and Etcheverry’s game is better suited for a slower court than it is the speeding courts Down Under.

Pick: Etcheverry +1.5 Sets (-105 – 1.5 units) & Etcheverry ML (+275 – 0.5 units)

Nicolas Jarry vs. Ugo Humbert – Munich

Humbert deserves a lot of credit for the way he battled in Monte-Carlo, as he took Alexei Popyrin to three sets despite playing with his hand wrapped. However, the fact that his hand was covered like that makes me nervous about how he’ll perform just a week later. If Humbert isn’t 100% heading into this meeting with Jarry, he’s going to have a lot of trouble winning this match.

Jarry is just 1-7 since the start of the 2025 season, and he hasn’t looked close to the level we’ve gotten used to with him. But Jarry was 39-20 in 2023 and made two finals in 2024. He’s also at his best on clay, where his serve is a big weapon and his ability to maneuver the baseline gets a lot better.

Jarry is 72-53 on the dirt in his career and played some great tennis on the red stuff last season. That said, at plus-money odds, I like his chances of beating a banged-up Humbert. This should be a match with several close sets, as both of these guys can really serve. But Jarry is a better clay-courter than Humbert, so I expect him to find a way to pull out the close ones.

Pick: Jarry ML (+112)

Jaume Munar vs. Frances Tiafoe – Barcelona

Munar is going to have the home crowd in this meeting with Tiafoe, and he’s also going to have the edge when it comes to clay-court ability. Tiafoe played great in Monte-Carlo last week, so I won’t say he lacks the ability to win here. But Tiafoe’s serve is more returnable on the dirt, and that’s one of the American’s biggest weapons. And Munar is a great returner, so he should be able to put a lot of pressure on Tiafoe. Also, the Spaniard is just a pain to play against along the baseline, as he moves extremely well, can grind opponents down and also has a ton of variety. On top of that, Munar has added some muscle and now packs a bigger punch when he looks to finish points.

Ultimately, this is a play in which I’m getting a very reasonable price for a player with 67 clay-court wins against one with 38 on the surface. Also, a lot of Tiafoe’s have come on the green clay in Houston. When you combine that with the added adrenaline Munar will have at home, it’s hard not to love the Spaniard.

Pick: Munar ML (-125 – 2 units)

Mariano Navone vs. Felix Auger Aliassime – Munich

Auger Aliassime can take some time to get himself going, which is why he has struggled in the opening rounds of tournaments. That’s a problem heading into a meeting with Navone. Auger Aliassime is a better clay-court player than you might think, but the serve is still a huge part of his game. Well, Navone is an awesome returner on this surface, so he might be able to neutralize the Canadian’s biggest weapon. Also, Navone will have an edge in longer rallies against Auger-Aliassime, as he’s just a great mover that hits big and can hit with topspin. Auger Aliassime has improved as a mover, but it’s not going to be better than a natural clay-courters. Also, Auger Aliassime is still a player that likes to hit flatter shots, which has a place on clay but isn’t exactly what you need to outlast tough opponents.

There’s a reason Auger Aliassime lost to Daniel Altmaier in Monte-Carlo: He’s beatable when playing on slower surfaces. So, I’m grabbing this big plus-money number for Navone, who has proven he can win big matches on red clay.

Pick: Navone ML (+135)
