The boxing world descends on Las Vegas once again, as WBC, WBA, and WBO Super Middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is back in action against unbeaten No. 1 contender Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday, September 14.
The Canelo vs. Berlanga fight is set for Prime Video PPV at 8 p.m. ET and will be the second fight of the year for Alvarez, who beat Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas back in May.

Two very different styles will be on display here. Canelo’s last five fights have all gone the full 12 rounds and ended in unanimous decision. He lost to Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas on May 7, 2022 and has won four in a row since, including the unanimous decision over Munguia in May. Canelo also went the distance with Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, and Gennady Golovkin.
The Bivol loss is one of two in Canelo’s pro career. He also lost to Floyd Mayweather way back in 2013.
But, the Berlanga fight is interesting. The 27-year-old Brooklyn native is 22-0 and 17 of his fights have finished in knockout fashion, with 16 straight in the first round to begin his pro career. Since then Berlanga has won five times by unanimous decision and is coming off of a sixth-round stoppage win over Padraig McCrory.
There is an enormous gap in experience between these two fighters, as Berlanga hasn’t fought anybody in the same realm as the guys that Canelo has fought for the last 15 years. Berlanga bested Marcelo Esteban Coceres on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III back in October 2021, so he’s fought at T-Mobile Arena before.
Canelo has 63 professional fights to his name and that is one of many reasons why he is such a big favorite at -1800. Berlanga’s punching power and history of knockouts could be an equalizer, but as he has stepped up in class, the decisions have popped up.
Canelo will also have the best defense of any fighter that Berlanga has encountered. He’s also one of the sport’s top counter punchers. And while he hasn’t shown the same penchant for knockouts of late, we truly have no idea what Berlanga’s chin is like because he hasn’t been hit a whole lot. Canelo is giving up some height and reach in this fight, but that’s happened throughout his career at 5-foot-7 and change. Berlanga has a couple inches of reach and stands 6-foot-1, so those are things in his favor.
Your best hope with Berlanga here is to try some sort of long shot like a knockout in one of the first few rounds, which are all priced at +10000 in this fight by DraftKings.
The longer it goes, the bigger the advantage gets for Canelo, who is smarter, savvier, more technical fighter and also the one with better defensive skills. Canelo has also never been knocked out.
You can get Canelo at -290 to win by KO/TKO/DQ or +260 to win by decision or technical decision. I think picking the one you like more between those two is the route to go.
