Boston College vs. Nebraska Prediction
Boston College is in better shape than Nebraska when looking at transfers, opt-outs and injuries. The Eagles do have some injuries, with linebackers Owen McGowan and Kam Arnold out. And some people expect defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku to sit, even though he is on the bowl game depth chart. However, Boston College only has three guys transferring, and none of them are starters. Meanwhile, Nebraska lost starters Jimari Butler, Mikai Gbayor and Nate Boerkircher to the portal, as well as several depth pieces. And wide receiver Isaiah Neyor won’t be playing in this game.
Even with some notable absences for the Cornhuskers, it’s hard to imagine them losing this game. Nebraska was 28th in college in EPA per play allowed (-0.060) during the regular season, and Boston College was just 49th (-0.025). The Cornhuskers also have a slightly better EPA per play (0.020 vs. 0.016) on offense. It’s not a huge edge, but Nebraska having a better defense, similar offense and more trustworthy quarterback has to mean something. Dylan Raiola will be the best quarterback on the field in this one. However, winning and winning by more than a field goal are completely different. And the Eagles are 8-3-1 against the spread this year, and they have covered in five straight games. That said, I’m not rushing to the window to back Nebraska in this game.
If forced into action, I’d actually be more likely to go with the Under. It’s going to be chilly, windy and rainy when these teams take the field at Yankee Stadium. Boston College is also 16th in the nation in run frequency (60.05%) this year, so the team already wants to pound away on the ground — especially with some shakiness at the quarterback position. And while Nebraska definitely wants to attack through the air, the conditions might not call for it.
The Under is also 5-1 in the six non-conference games the Cornhuskers have played under Matt Rhule. In that span, the Under is also 5-3 in the eight games Nebraska has played against winning teams. Also, while Bill O’Brien has seen his fair share of Overs in his time with Boston College, three of the four non-conference games the Eagles have played have gone Under.
Lean: Under 45.5 (-110)
