One of my favorite betting systems from Steve Makinen is also the first one he ever published for VSiN, back in the fall of 2017.
College football has changed dramatically since then, thanks largely to NIL, the transfer portal and the increased job-jumping of today’s coaches.
Consider this: Of the 138 FBS programs this season, 35 — more than one in four (25.4%) — have a new head coach.
Through all that change, Steve’s College Football Stability System has endured — and might be even more relevant today.
The premise is simple: Continuity matters most early in the season, when teams with new coaches, coordinators, quarterbacks and significant roster turnover are still figuring things out.
Steve has updated the system for 2026, and there are some terrific nuggets in his analysis inside the VSiN College Football Betting Guide:
🏈 Teams returning 17+ starters have gone 55.7% ATS in the first four weeks over the last five seasons.
🏈 Only four teams return 17+: Arizona State, Houston, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
🏈 There are 10 teams with a Stability Score of zero, compared with an average of just 6.25 over the previous four seasons. Steve calls 2026 one of the most unstable seasons on record.
🏈 New head coaches are only 45.4% ATS against returning coaches during Weeks 0-3 since 2021.
🎯 Steve has already identified Hawaii -3.5 at Stanford and UNLV -3.5 vs. Memphis as the first two playable Stability System games of Week 0 on Aug. 29.
In other words, this isn’t just an interesting offseason exercise. Steve’s system has already produced two potential bets for the first Saturday of the season.
