SMU Mustangs at TCU Horned Frogs – 12:00 pm ET
TCU is fourth in the nation in EPA per play (0.035) right now, and the team is averaging 45.0 points per game thus far. Well, the Horned Frogs will now get to go to work against a Mustangs team that is 93rd in the nation in EPA per play allowed (0.005). SMU’s passing defense also happens to be the main issue this year, which isn’t what you want against TCU. Sonny Dykes’ offenses are always dangerous through the air, but that’s never been more true than with Josh Hoover under center. Hoover was seventh in the nation in passing yards (3,949) last year, and he looks a little sharper to start the 2025 season. He should be able to pick apart this defense.
However, SMU is going to get some punches in too. After all, when these two met last season, the Mustangs emerged with a 66-42 victory in Dallas. While this SMU team isn’t as well-rounded as last year’s group, the Mustangs still have the electric Kevin Jennings at quarterback. Plus, Rhett Lashlee is still calling the plays. Until that changes, this is a dangerous offense.
This has simply been a high-scoring series in recent years. Four of the last five meetings between these two have seen at least 76 points on the scoreboard. The Over is also 5-1 in the games that TCU has played as a home favorite of 7 or fewer points with Dykes at the helm.
I’ll also note that Steve Makinen has these teams combining for 67.7 points in his projections. That’s a nice edge to the Over.

West Virginia Mountaineers at Kansas Jayhawks – 6:00 pm ET
West Virginia is coming off an emotional overtime win over Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl. Now, the Mountaineers, who really should have lost that game, find themselves in a massive let-down spot. To make matters worse, they’re facing a Jayhawks team that is coming off a bye week.
Since Lance Leipold took over as the head coach of Kansas, the Jayhawks are 5-1 both straight-up and against the spread off a bye week. He’s a great football mind and he knows how to take advantage of the extra preparation time. Also, Kansas is 2-0 both SU and ATS as a home favorite of 7.5 to 14 points under Leipold. Meanwhile, Rich Rodriguez’s teams are just 5-12 as road underdogs of 7.5 to 14 points throughout his career.
In addition to the trends and overall spot favoring the Jayhawks, it’s also just hard to imagine the Mountaineers keeping up offensively. West Virginia’s quarterback situation is a bit of a mess. That’s trouble against a Kansas team that has one of the most electric quarterbacks in football in Jalon Daniels. The Jayhawks are currently second in the nation in EPA per play (0.050), and Daniels’ ability to torch teams with his arm and his legs is a big part of that. I see him having a massive game in a blowout victory.
