Indiana Hoosiers at Nebraska Cornhuskers – 12:00 pm ET
Indiana has been an absolute wagon under Curt Cignetti, but the team has looked somewhat vulnerable recently. We actually came very close to seeing this group lose to Northwestern in Bloomington a few weeks back. I like this year’s Wildcats team, but the Hoosiers from last year wouldn’t have allowed that type of performance to happen. That said, this Indiana team is a notch or two below, and I wouldn’t say the squad is above getting tested by Nebraska — especially in Lincoln.
The Cornhuskers actually have stronger advanced stats than the Hoosiers right now, with their superior defense being what stands out. I also happen to love what Nebraska is doing offensively. Anthony Colandrea has really taken to Dana Holgorsen’s system, and the former Virginia and UNLV quarterback is currently a top-10 player at the position when looking at Pro Football Focus grades (90.8). As long as Colandrea can avoid costly turnovers, this is a game that should be very close.
Of course, we haven’t seen Matt Rhule truly break out with Nebraska, and these are the games that have tripped his Cornhuskers up. But it feels like there’s something different about this team, and I think they’re getting the Hoosiers at the right time.
Bet: Nebraska +7.5 (-108 – 1.5 units) & Nebraska ML (+250 – 0.5 units)
LSU Tigers at Kentucky Wildcats – 7:00 pm ET
This game opened with a total of 49.5, but it shot up to 52.5 pretty much everywhere. Well, I ended up jumping on the Under on a rogue 53.5, but I would still be looking Under with 52.5.
I’m normally the guy rushing to take Overs when two exciting offenses are on the field together. However, while LSU and Kentucky are known as explosive teams — and have offensive masterminds calling their offenses — their defenses are underrated entering this one.
As of right now, LSU is No. 2 in the nation in Net Adjusted EPA/Play Allowed (-0.31). Meanwhile, Kentucky is No. 13 (-0.18) in that category. On top of that, while these offenses can put up a lot of points, we have already seen Sam Leavitt and Kenny Minchey struggle against high-level competition. Leavitt was all over the place in a loss to Ole Miss, and Minchey had a poor game against Alabama.
There’s also a decent chance it’ll rain in Lexington on Saturday, and the forecast calls for a little wind. It’s also worth noting that the Under is 7-3 in the 10 games Lane Kiffin’s previous teams have played as road favorites of 7.5 to 14 points. This will be his first time playing a game like this as the head coach of LSU, but sign me up for that number moving to 8-3.
Bet: Under 53.5 (-108)
USC Trojans at Penn State Nittany Lions – 7:30 pm ET
Penn State is coming off a rough loss to Northwestern, as the team was a 2.5-point favorite and lost by 21. The Nittany Lions have now lost two games in a row, and you’re not going to find many people who are feeling good about the state of this year’s squad. Well, I’m not going to sit here and tell you I believe in this team moving forward, but I do think they’ll win this week.
These just haven’t been the types of games that have gone Lincoln Riley’s way at USC. Since Riley got this job, the Trojans are just 2-5 both straight-up and against the spread in games with lines between +3 and -3. Also, USC is a miserable 0-5 SU as a road underdog under Riley. Meanwhile, Matt Campbell is 19-7 SU as a home favorite in his coaching career, and his teams are also 13-10 SU when coming off two or more consecutive losses.
I simply don’t see Penn State showing up and laying an egg here. Also, for as bad as these last two weeks have been, the Nittany Lions (+0.21) have a better Net Adjusted EPA/Play than the Trojans (+0.00). Penn State has also been one of the best passing defenses in the country, which sets up nicely as the team looks to slow down Jayden Maiava.
Bet: Penn State ML (-118)
