Much like last week, calling this an “Opening” Line Report is disingenuous, as these Week 1 college football numbers have been up for a long time. But, even though we’ve seen some positions taken and some mild adjustments from those and bits of news that have filtered out, we’re going to see some bigger swings from influential bettors and groups since game week has arrived.
Betting limits increase the closer we get to kickoff and that should give us a much better indication of what the most respected wagerers think of this week’s matchups. Remember, even though these lines have been up for a long time, this remains a high-variance environment with all the portal-induced roster turnover and all the new coaches and coordinators. The more variance, the better it is for us on this side of the counter. Things will tighten up with more data points for the teams and more customer data for the books to analyze. But, these first few weeks are where we need to be aggressive.
We go from eight FBS vs. FBS games to 43 as the season gets underway for 122 of the 138 FBS teams. Some are playing FCS opponents and some of those games are definitely notable as well.
Week 1 College Football Odds Report
Lines as of Sunday, August 30 at 5:30 p.m. PT
Colorado at Georgia Tech (-6.5, 50.5)
Thursday, 8 p.m. ET
The only competitively-lined game on Thursday is this Big 12 vs. ACC matchup in Atlanta. This line was -7 throughout most of the summer, but recently moved to 6.5 market-wide. Life without Haynes King brings uncertainty to Georgia Tech, but Alberto Mendoza gets his shot now after sitting in his brother’s shadow in Bloomington for a while. Given that this is the only game hovering near a key number, it’ll likely be the one with the highest handle on September 3.
San Jose State at Eastern Michigan (-3.5, 54.5)
Friday, 6:30 p.m. ET
The first game of the week featuring two teams that played in Week 0 has another California team trekking to Ypsilanti, Michigan. San Jose State showed well in their loss to USC, as our own Tyler Shoemaker’s TSI Adjusted Box Score read just 34-30 in favor of the Trojans. Eastern Michigan was a pretty popular play last week against FBS newcomer Sacramento State and proved to be the right side. So far, we’ve seen a move up on the total here, but not much side movement just yet. Because we have a data point for each team, I do think the modeling crowd will have something to say about this game.
Miami (FL) (-24.5, 47.5) at Stanford
Friday, 9 p.m. ET
I mentioned this game in my Week 1 Power Ratings update because I have it Miami -20.5. We’ll see if the adjusted line is right, as this opened 21.5 over the summer and gradually moved up. The big story from Week 0 was the late scoop-and-score for Stanford that allowed them to cover every number and lock up the win in a game where they were the better team for three quarters before allowing the Hawaii offense to wake up in the fourth. Miami is unquestionably the more talented team, but does it help the Trees that they played a game and that Davis Warren looked pretty good in live action?
Coastal Carolina at West Virginia (-21.5, 56.5)
Saturday, Noon ET
This line settled in at 21.5 earlier in August, so this isn’t really a recent or earth-shattering line move. Pretty rare territory here for WVU, as they have not been favored by 21+ points against a FBS opponent since they were -21 against Kansas in Week 7 of the 2020 COVID season. Prior to that, it was Kansas again in 2018 when they failed to cover as a 28.5-point favorite. Coastal Carolina has a new head coach in Ryan Beard (Missouri State) and a lot of new faces, while Rich Rodriguez is back for another go in Morgantown. This number might be a touch high. We shall see.
Oklahoma State (-14, 60.5) at Tulsa
Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET
What a fun game here. I love when Big Brother is willing to visit Little Brother and that’s the case in the Sooner State between Oklahoma State and Tulsa. Remember, Tulsa beat Oklahoma State last season and that was when the firing of Mike Gundy started to look like a reality. This line was 11.5 at open over the summer and touched as high as 14.5. There was some chatter on social media when Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb said of Okie State, “this is the most talented team we’re going to play” and then continued in the interview by talking about mistakes his team made during practice. Not exactly a lot of confidence from the head coach who is going up against Eric Morris, who had his own social media buzz after he shot and killed an armadillo that was wreaking havoc on his landscaping. It’s great to have college football back.
Clemson at LSU (-10.5, 51.5)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET
There are no big developments in the life cycle of this line, but this is a massive game. It is Lane Kiffin’s Baton Rouge debut and a chance for Dabo Swinney to show that the Clemson program can get back to where it was after a very rare down season in 2025. This is a primetime game and the game of the day and it is going to get a very large public betting handle. Because the lines aren’t super sharp as of yet, this is the type of game where public influence has a chance to move the line, especially if the influential bettors don’t have much to say about it. This is a line I’ll be following closely.
Central Michigan at New Mexico (-10.5, 46.5)
Saturday, 10 p.m. ET
How much is a college football quarterback worth? It’s a hard question to answer, but it seems like Jack Layne is worth at least a couple points to the number. The New Mexico starter from last season is out for the year. We knew he was hurt and some plugged-in groups and individuals knew that ahead of the rest of us, as this line ticked from 12.5 to 11.5 and then fell further to 10.5 when the Layne news dropped. It’s a weird trip for the boys from Mount Pleasant to go to Albuquerque and the double-digit line still reflects that.
UCLA (-1.5, 53.5) at Cal
Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET
This line flipped a couple weeks ago to have UCLA favored over Cal in this Big Ten vs. ACC clash, which still feels so weird to say. There are a lot of intriguing storylines here. Nico Iamaleava’s first game at UCLA with new head coach Bob Chesney and new OC Dean Kennedy. Tosh Lupoi’s head coaching debut for Cal. The hype behind Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. These favorite flips could be about virtually anything. An influential bettor. News/rumors of suspensions and other stuff we haven’t heard of yet. All kinds of stuff. But, we have one and that’s interesting.
Washington State at Washington (-23.5, 50.5)
Sunday, 4 p.m. ET
A Week 1 Apple Cup is quite a treat, as Washington State of the reimagined Pac-12 takes on Big Ten member Washington in the annual rivalry game. This is another line that gradually inched up over the summer with very little interest in the Wazzu side of things. They have a first-year head coach in Kirby Moore, the younger brother of Kellen Moore. Washington still has Jedd Fisch, whose name came up for other gigs, but he stayed in Seattle. This is a big number and it’s a rivalry game, so I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see Washington State money later in the week. Washington won 59-24 last season, but lost 24-19 at home back in 2024.
SMU (-3, 53.5) at Florida State
Monday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Monday Night Football: College Edition! This was 2.5 throughout most of the summer, but after the performance that Florida State put out against New Mexico State, SMU moved up to a solid 3, and even moved to 3.5 at Fanduel. Some may look at FSU and say that it’s good that they got a game under them, especially with new QB Ashton Daniels, but Mike Norvell got blasted all over social media and it was just not an aesthetically-pleasing game for the Seminoles. It’s the first game for SMU, but they’ve really performed better than expected since joining the ACC and have a returner at QB in Kevin Jennings.
