Jeff Siegel’s Horse Racing Picks for Friday 7/22

Xpressbet writer Jeff Siegel offers his top plays for Friday.

Saratoga Race No. 2 (1:39 p.m. ET/10:39 a.m. PT)
#6 Oglethorpe (5-2)

Didn’t get the best of trips when second in his debut in the mud at Belmont Park in early June but today switches to what we suspect is his preferred surface (grass) and he should be able to make the most of the opportunity. The son of Arrogate was impressive in a recent local turf workout and seems certain to step forward in a major way under today’s conditions for a barn that has strong stats with the second-time starter angle. With Joel Rosario riding him back and at 5-2 on the morning line, the Danny Gargan-trained colt should make for an attractive gamble.

Del Mar Race No. 10 (9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT)
#3 Pray for Me Ray (7-2)

Has the prerequisite two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out angle to have him primed for a major effort in this turf maiden miler after finishing strongly to be third in a fast, highly rated dash at Santa Anita last month. The son of Vancouver lands a comfortable inside draw, projects to draft into a nice second-flight, ground-saving position, and then have his chance to kick on with it when called up. Let’s make him a strong play in the Win pool at 7-2 on the morning line.
