(Editor’s Note: Six-decade horseplayer and longtime friend of VSiN’s Dave Tuley, Ed Sehon is featured every Saturday on Team Tuley’s Thoroughbred Takes, and he returns this weekend under the guise of his handicapping alter ego, Mr. Ed. This summer, instead of posting selections and betting strategies each day, Ed will focus his wagering acumen and brief commentary on Friday through Sunday racing cards, where most of the rich, high-profile stakes action will occur.)

ATTENDANCE: Might average 30,000/day. STAKES: 17 Grade 1s. PURSES: Many days exceed $1 million. TV: Saratoga Live on Fox Sports 1. And above all: Be sure to watch for Mr. Ed’s exclusive selections at VSiN.com every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
IN CONCLUSION: WATCH YOURSELF. While no one anticipates the Spa opening more than Mr. Ed, he will leave much of his bankroll in the ATM for the first few weeks of the meet. For many, betting at Saratoga can be like going on one’s first four-day junket to Las Vegas. If you try to do everything the first day in town — eating, drinking and betting every game on the board — you may very well end up broke, spending the final three days in your hotel room. Early on at Saratoga, take time to get a feel for how the tracks are playing, what jockeys are hot or not and which trainers have the loaded barns. Mr. Ed’s motto: Learn a little, save a lot.
