#3 Buccherino (4-1 morning line odds) is my top play on the Pennsylvania Derby Day card in greater Philadelphia. This is a progressive, young horse coming off a career-best effort with a ceiling not yet realized. He’s a horse-for-course at Parx, winning three times here, and there’s no reason he can’t continue to improve. Win bet #3.

The $1 million Pennsylvania Derby runs through likely favorite #7 Dragoon Guard (9-5 morning line odds). The more I looked up and down the lineup trying to find a horse who could beat him at a bigger price, the more I kept coming back to Dragoon Guard. He’s been on the early lead in his last three races, but he doesn’t need to have the front for success. He’s sired by Arrogate, and I’m snobbish on that pedgiree, as he’s expected to get better with age. He’s already won 4 in a row by daylight, so this is the logical next spot for him in a Grade 1 that didn’t come up all that difficult. Win bet #7.
