Saratoga Picks for July 3:
IN HIS MIND HE’S GONE TO SARATOGA: After an embarrassing parade of losers at Churchill Downs last weekend, Mr. Ed couldn’t get out of Louisville fast enough. So, it’s on to his favorite summertime spot. An early look at today’s 11-race Opening Day program at the Spa is highlighted by a pair of stakes (Races 8 & 9) and a wide-open starter allowance (Race 11), to conclude the card’s Pick 6. Looking ahead, Mr. Ed will post his exclusive VSiN selections every Wednesday-Sunday thru Labor Day.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE JOCKEYS GONE? Two of the nation’s top riders — Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez — will be absent from the Spa til Wednesday, the result of suspensions handed out by stewarts at the NY track last Summer and by Delaware Park officials last month. Two other popular jockeys — Kendrick Carmouche and always-smiling Katie Davis — will also be out until Wednesday, due to riding rules infractions. Lastly, jockey Chris Elliott sits out the first three days of the meet due to careless riding, according to reports in the Daily Racing Form.
HIP, HIP SPA RAH: It doesn’t take a handicapping guru like Mr. Ed to predict that fan favs Irad Ortiz, Jr. (once he’s out of the pokey) and Flavien Prat will both have excellent meets. But, keep an eye on popular NYers Manny Franco and Kendrick Carmouche (pokey, too) and NJ import Paco Lopez to be among the Top 10 riders. As for trainers, the barns of Chad Brown, Brad Cox and Linda Rice are expected to excel, while Mr. Ed believes Miguel Clement, Whit Beckman, Danny Gargan and Wesley Ward all will have an excellent meet.
