Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Friday, May 12th:
New York Mets (-125, 8.5) at Washington Nationals
Tylor Megill had a 1.65 ERA after 6.0 shutout innings against the Miami Marlins on April 7th. Since then, Megill has allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last five starts. And his ERA is all the way up at 4.33. Megill is a guy that gives up a lot of hard contact, and he’s a threat to get shelled every time he toes the rubber. To this point in his career, his advanced stats suggest he has gotten very lucky. However, you’d expect that to catch up with him at some point. With that said, it seems like he could run into a little trouble against Washington.
When looking for ways to take advantage of how often Megill gives up hard contact, one thing that stood out is that Joey Meneses’ total bases over is paying out at plus-money odds. The 31-year-old is on an absolute tear right now, as he has had at least two total bases in each of his last four games. So, with Meneses swinging a hot bat, it’s hard not to like him to do some damage here.
Bet: Meneses Over 1.5 Total Bases (+110)
Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-175, 8.5)
Gerrit Cole has had his struggles with the Rays in his career, and that includes a start in which he gave up five earned runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings on Sunday. That was Cole’s most recent trip to the hill, so the wounds could still be a little fresh. However, this game will be played at Yankee Stadium, where Cole has been electric this season.
On the year, Cole is a ridiculous 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA over five home starts. In those games, Cole has struck out 41 batters over 33.0 innings of work. With that in mind, Cole should be looking forward to getting back out there. He’ll have a better idea of how he should approach this lineup, and he’ll be pumped up to be doing it at home.
Bet: Cole Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-150)
Chicago Cubs at Minnesota Twins (-150, 7.5)
Sonny Gray has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. The righty is 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA and he has 47 strikeouts over 40.0 innings of work. Tonight, we’re looking to Gray to strike out seven batters against the Cubs. Gray has already had four games in which he has struck out at least seven batters this season, and three of the four starts came in Minnesota.
It should be noted that Chicago doesn’t exactly strike out very often against right-handed pitching. But the Cubs haven’t faced many starters that are as hot as Gray right now. Considering how well he’s pitching, we’re taking the shot on this at +100 odds. Minnesota is a favorite in a game with a low total of 7.5, so the oddsmakers like Gray’s chances of pitching a gem tonight.
Bet: Gray Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+100)
