Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Thursday, August 10th:
Minnesota Twins (-162, 8.5) at Detroit Tigers
Reese Olson was a top-10 prospect in the Tigers organization last year, and he’s a pitcher that they’re very excited about. Olson has some heat on his fastball, but he also has a rather dangerous slider. In fact, he misses the most bats with that slider, by far. Since coming up and getting his shot with Detroit, Olson has seen some inconsistent results. The righty did have three games in which he struck out at least six batters in June, which is the number we’re looking for tonight. However, he hasn’t done it in any of his last seven starts. That’s why we’re getting such good odds on this.
The reality is that Olson can really fly off the handle when he’s not pitching well. But this is still a matchup in which I’d expect him to rack up strikeouts, and it’s worth playing at this price. Olson had nine strikeouts when he faced the Twins back on June 24th, and he did it in only 5.1 innings of work. So, he has had success against this lineup before. And Minnesota has the highest strikeout rate in all of baseball this season, so it just doesn’t get much better than this as far as matchups go.
Bet: Olson Over 5.5 Strikeouts (+120)
Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies (-258, 9)
This has been a trying season for J.T. Realmuto, whose .241 batting average is the lowest he’s had since he entered the league in 2014. Realmuto is also on pace to fall well short of the other numbers we’ve grown to expect from him. Having said that, I still believe he’s in a good position to do some damage in tonight’s matchup with Patrick Corbin.
I’m not as down on Corbin as most people are, but he has had a lot of trouble with this Phillies lineup. And Realmuto is one of the ones that has really hit him hard in the past, with the catcher being 11 for 32 with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs against the southpaw. With that in mind, I love that you can get Realmuto at plus-money odds to go Over 1.5 total bases here. I can easily see him ripping an extra base hit, or even taking Corbin deep here.
Bet: Realmuto Over 1.5 Total Bases (+105)
Kansas City Royals at Boston Red Sox (-250, 10.5)
Trevor Story is hitless since returning to action, as he is 0 for 8 over the last two games. But Story now gets to face Austin Cox as a lefty opener. Story has always mashed against left-handed pitching, so I can see him doing damage against Cox in the first or second inning. From there, the Royals will be trotting out a bunch of relievers throughout the game. Kansas City has the second-highest bullpen ERA in baseball this year, so Boston should have plenty of chances to score here. That’s why I’m playing Story to record his first RBI of the season at plus-money odds.
Overall, I understand if you’re worried about rust getting in the shortstop’s way, but Story was hitting .300 with four homers and nine RBIs in 40 at-bats in the minors before the Red Sox decided to call him up. So, he has had plenty of time to face live pitching and it’s only a matter of time before he gets comfortable in the majors again.
Bet: Story Over 0.5 RBIs (+115)
