Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Tuesday, August 22nd:
Chicago Cubs (-120, 9) at Detroit Tigers
I don’t like to give out plays with a ton of juice very often, but I actually think that it’s worth paying up for Reese Olson to have Over 1.5 walks tonight. The talented 24-year-old is coming off a start in which he gave up four earned runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work, so Olson’s confidence might be a little shaken in this spot. He has also walked at least two batters in three of his last five starts, and he now has a very difficult matchup against the red-hot Cubs.
Chicago is a team that really milks its at-bats, and the team is up at fifth in the league in walk rate this season. So, the Cubs should be able to stay patient and force Olson into some difficult situations. And I find it hard to believe that he won’t give in and put a few free baserunners out there.
Bet: Olson Over 1.5 Walks (-170)
New York Mets at Atlanta Braves (-218, 10.5)
I had Tylor Megill to give up Over 3.5 earned runs the last time he faced the Braves, and I don’t see any reason to go away from it again. Atlanta scored five earned on nine hits in 5.1 innings the last time it faced the struggling righty, so this is clearly a matchup that the Braves like. But realistically, there aren’t many matchups that scare this Atlanta team. The Braves are first in the league in wRC+ against both righties and lefties this season. This is an offense that can generally be counted on to produce, and I think they’ll chase Megill somewhat early here.
It only makes things better for bettors that Megill is a miserable 2-4 with an 8.20 ERA in nine road starts this season. Now, he faces a Braves team that is even better offensively when playing at home, and he does it in a pretty hitter-friendly ballpark. All in all, things could get ugly here.
Bet: Megill Over 3.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-115)
Minnesota Twins (-115, 8.5) at Milwaukee Brewers
Wade Miley has had two strikeouts in each of his last two starts, so the lefty isn’t exactly missing bats at a high clip. But Miley has still had a few games in which he has racked up a decent amount of strikeouts this season, and he actually had at least five strikeouts in back-to-back starts before this recent spell. That’s the exact mark he’d need to reach in order to cash his Over at plus-money odds tonight.
The reason to like Miley is pretty simple: Minnesota has the highest strikeout rate in baseball this season, by a pretty wide margin. With that in mind, it doesn’t take the nastiest stuff in the world to fool some of these hitters. So, I’m taking a chance on the lefty to go out there and turn in an exciting performance.
Bet: Miley Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+120)
